Salisbury rising senior Katelyn Horning is competing for a spot on the U.S. World team at the Outdoor National Inline Speed Skating Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
At the conclusion of competition conducted on the track portion of the event, Horning stands in third place with 42 points.
Horning has won three bronze medals so far for thirds in the 300 time trials, 15K elimination race and the 10K point race. She also placed fifth in the 500 meters and 1000 meter.
The competition continues with road-course events on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The top six finishers make the U.S. team that will compete in Spain in September.
Horning competes in track and cross country for the Hornets.
– Intimidators win again
Kannapolis starting pitcher Charlie Shirek retired the first 16 batters he faced, took a perfect game into the sixth inning and led the Intimidators to a 5-3 victory over Lexington at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Sunday.
Logan Johnson had two RBIs for the Intimidators, and Matt Inouye extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double in the fourth inning.
The Intimidators closed out the first half of the SAL season on a three-game win streak, tying their longest of the year.

– Mocksville Legion wins
Mocksville’s American Legion team scored six runs in the third inning and defeated Statesville 10-6 on Sunday.
Jake Koontz pitched six strong innings for the win and fanned seven. Clint Howell struck out four in three innings and picked up a save.
Howell and Seth Miller had two hits each for Mocksville while Zack Russell-Myers hit a home run.
Mocksville is making up Saturday’s rainout with Mooresville tonight at Mooresville.
– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played a nine-hole event on Sunday.
The format was Captain’s Choice.
Matt and Liz Murphy and Phyllis Myers won the event with a score of 33.
Finishing second was the team of Andy and Dolly Canup and Yvonne Barger with a 34. Third was the team of Gene and Mary Seaford and Brett Leslie.
– N.C. Amateur golf
Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 77 on the final round of the N.C. Amateur Golf Championship at Raleigh Country Club and finished tied for 45th at 302.
Collins shot 75s in each of the first three rounds and finished 18-over for the tournament.
Winning the tournament was Jack Fields of Southern Pines. He shot 1-under for the event.
– Coastal Plain League
Forest City’s Wade Moore (West Rowan) had two hits and scored twice in a 9-1 victory over Asheboro on Sunday.
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits and drove in Chris Ahearn (Catawba) with the only run for the Copperheads.
* Columbia’s Keegan Linza (North Rowan) had a strong start on Saturday, striking out eight and allowing two runs in six innings, but he was the losing pitcher in a 5-1 setback to Florence.
* Ross Steedley (East Rowan) drove in the only run for Wilson in a 3-1 loss to Wilmington on Sunday. Wilson is missing the big bat of Jerry Sands (Catawba), who recently signed with the Dodgers.
* Thomasville’s Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus, Catawba) pitched 32/3 scoreless innings in relief in a 5-2 loss to Gastonia on Saturday.
– Minor leagues
New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) threw four scoreless innings in a 7-3 loss to Binghamton in a suspended Eastern League game that was completed on Sunday.
Ward allowed four hits and struck out four.
* Binghamton’s Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was the losing pitcher in Sunday’s regularly scheduled Double-A game with New Britain. Parnell (5-4) worked 52/3 innings. He allowed 10 hits and five runs. He struck out four.
– Rowan Junior Open
The first annual Rowan Junior Open Golf Championship will be held July 7-8 at the Club at Irish Creek and the Warrior Golf Club.
There is an entry fee of $50 and players can apply through July 2.
Entries are open to male and female amateur golfers who have not reached their 19th birthday by July 8 and who have not started college. Entries are open to the first 96 applicants.
