UNC Wilmington’s Brad Holt, the 33rd pick in the recent baseball draft, has signed with the New York Mets.
Holt’s contract should be in the neighborhood of $1 million. The Mets also signed South Carolina shortstop Reese Havens, the 22nd pick, for $1.4 million.
Holt, an Albemarle graduate, pitched for Stanly Post 76 against Rowan County in 2005. He struck out 10 Rowan hitters in a 9-1 Stanly victory at Newman Park that season
Holt, who was 11-1 for the Seahawks this year, is the highest draft pick in UNC Wilmington history. He throws a mid-90s fastball. The Mets drafted him with a compensation pick they were awarded when the Atlanta Braves signed Tom Glavine.
Holt will start his professional career with the Brooklyn Cyclones.
n Huff gets new postClifton Huff, Livingstone athletics director for more than a decade, has been named senior associate athletics director at Florida A&M in Tallahassee.
Huff, a Wilmington native, is a Livingstone Hall of Famer for his efforts as a track standout, track coach and administrator.
Florida A&M hired Bill Hayes as its athletics director last November, and he started working for the Rattlers in January. A legendary football coach at Winston-Salem State and North Carolina A&T, Hayes was N.C. Central AD before accepting the Florida A&M post.
n Intimidators winJim Gallagher and Sergio Morales hit homers to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 5-2 victory over visiting Lexington on Friday.
Levi Maxwell worked six innings for the victory. Henry Mabee notched a save and is 15-for-15 in save chances.
n N.C. Amateur golf
Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 75 for the second straight day in the North Carolina Amateur Championship tournament at Raleigh Country Club.
Collins is tied for 46th and made the cut. He is 14 shots off the pace set by Cary’s Kevin O’Connell.
n Dellinger update
Catawba graduate Dusty Dellinger has been hired by the Professional Baseball Umpire Corp. as a part-time field evaluator and instructor.
PBUC observes, instructs and evaluates umpires working in the minor leagues.
Prior to joining PBUC, Dellinger, umpired in the New York-Penn, South Atlantic, Carolina, Southern, International and Arizona Fall leagues. He spent time in the majors on a part-time basis.
Dellinger will be based in China Grove.n Bowhunters meet
The Annual N.C. Bowhunters Association Annual Youth Wildlife Education Day will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Lake McIntosh in Burlington. Events include outdoor demos, expositions and a fishing derby. Admission is free. Contact Mickey Strader at 336-339-9095.

Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had four hits for Asheboro in an 8-1 victory over Gastonia on Thursday. Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) had two hits and scored two runs for the Copperheads. Chis Ahearn (Catawba) had two RBIs.
SCBLCraige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) has a homer and four RBIs and is batting .385 for Morganton.
n Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) had two RBIs and two steals for the Lake Norman Copperheads in a 9-3 victory over the Carolina Chaos on Wednesday.
