East Rowan players were in the lineup as Rowan County thrashed High Point 14-3 in seven innings in a non-division game at Newman Park on Sunday.
Billy Veal pitched all seven innings for Rowan.
Rowan scored three runs in the first inning as Justin Roland, Philip Miclat, Micah Jarrett and Trey Holmes produced consecutive hits.
D.C. Cranford’s bases-clearing triple highlighted a six-run third inning.
Rowan (4-3, 1-3) plays host to Lexington on Tuesday.
* Scottie Williams got the win and Garrett Braun got the save as Mooresville held off Stanly 7-6 on Sunday. Braun knocked in three runs. Jordan Farrell went 2-for-3 for the Moors.
– College track and field
Winthrop’s Jason Williams (West Rowan) set a school record in the high jump with an effort of 7 feet, 1 inch in NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday.
* N.C. State’s Jason Jones (East Rowan) placed sixth in the shot put in East Regional with an effort of 58-83/4.
* Appalachian State’s Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) finished 28th in the triple jump with a best of 47-91/4.
– College baseball regionals
South Carolina’s Whit Merrifield (Davie County) went 3-for-3 in a 5-4 loss to N.C. State on Saturday and drove in a run in a 7-5 victory against James Madison in an elimination game on Sunday.
– Coastal Plain League
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had three hits, including a triple, for the Asheboro in a 9-7 victory against Gastonia on Saturday. Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) had two hits, and Chris Ahearn (Catawba) had three.
* Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus, Catawba) pitched 22/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen as the Thomasville HiToms beat Forest City 10-5 on Saturday.
– College golf
Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 78-78-71 รณ 227 and led Virginia’s golf team at the NCAA Championships held at West Lafayette, Ind.
Collins had four birdies on the back side in his round on Saturday to shoot 1-under.
Virginia stood 26th after 54 holes and didn’t make the final cut.
– Komets win state title
For the second consecutive year, the Kannapolis Komets have won a girls basketball state championship.
The Komets got past the Rowan Cobras 32-23 in Albemarle on Sunday in the 12- and-under U.S.B.A. state title game.
The Komets, coached by Lennie Turner, rode the hot shooting of Rylee Troutman (four first-half 3-pointers ) and solid defense by Taylor Sehm-Crowley, Raven Phifer, Zana Tatum, and Danica Ford to a 21-3 halftime lead.
The Cobras rallied, cutting the lead to seven points with five minutes left, but clutch free throws by Ford sealed the championship. Sehm-Crowley’s floor leadership and the rebounding of Tatum and Phifer were also huge.
Other Komets seeing action in the three-day event were Kayla Crayton, Brittany Vaughters, Destiny Floyd and Mikala Ezzell.
