Rowan County will open the American Legion season tonight at Kernersville at 7 p.m. with a patchwork-quilt lineup on the field.
The majority of this summer’s regulars and pitching staff will come from an East Rowan team that is still involved in the 3A state playoffs, but coach Jim Gantt will get the season started with players from North Rowan, Salisbury, West Rowan and a handful of 2007 graduates such as Matt Hall and Justin Mock.
D.C. Cranford is also returning to the team this year, although he suffered a recent wrist injury.
Kernersville lost to High Point 15-3 on Wednesday.
* Mooresville postponed Wednesday’s scheduled game with Wilkes to June 4 and announced that Saturday’s scheduled game with Mocksville has been postponed to a later date.
– Rowan Juniors roll
Rowan County’s Junior Legion team opened with a 6-1 victory over Randolph County at McCrary Park on Wednesday.
Zack Simpson struck out five and allowed one earned run in 41/3 innings.
Thomas Allen got the win by inducing a 1-2-3 double play in the bottom of the fifth in relief of Simpson. Justin Morris picked up the save with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Simpson knocked in two runs at the plate. Tyler King drew three walks, scored two runs and had one of Rowan’s five steals.
East’s Brian Hightower will coach the Juniors this summer. East assistant John McNeil handled the opener.
– Intimidators lose
Kannapolis reliever Tyson Corley walked in the winning run in the eighth inning in a 5-4 loss to Delmarva on Thursday.
* West Middle wins West Rowan beat North Rowan 5-4 in nine innings in a middle school baseball game on Thursday.
Corbett Foster had three hits for West (8-4), Chase Laing had two. Taylor Garczynski, Bryson Bogle, and Bryce Burns also delivered hits for the Bulldogs.
Conner Edwards, pitched six innings and allowed four hits and one earned run. Chaise Laing pitched three innings and was credited with the win.
Tyler Wyatt and Justin Ogg had two hits each for the Mavericks.
– College baseball
Catawba outfielder David Thomas has been named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association South Region Player of the Year.
Catawba outfielder Jerry Sands joined Thomas on the all-region first team. Pitchers Blake Ketner and Tim Holmes were second team.
* Chris Taylor homered and Rob Lyerly knocked in three runs as Charlotte beat Duquesne 13-7 in the Atlantic 10 Championships on Thursday.
– College football
North Carolina Central will move its home football game against long-time rival North Carolina A&T to Memorial Stadium in Charlotte this fall. The 80th contest between the Eagles and Aggies kicks off at 5 p.m. on Oct. 4.

– Salisbury Academy golf
Salisbury Academy defeated North Hills 151-182 at Warrior to push its record to 18-0.
Leading the Jaguars was medalist Alex Nianouris with a 36. Chad Hoskins (37), Clark Alcorn (37) and Joseph Rusher (41) were other scorers.
Salisbury Academy plays at River Run in the Pac-8 championship match on Wednesday.
– Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hill Ladies Golf Association played in a crossover event on May 20.
Toni Iossi won low gross.
Cindy Carmazzi, Miriam Gruber and Carolyn Ries tied for first low met.
Tying for second low net were Shirley Baucom and Karla Swanson.
