SALISBURY — Police are investigating an overnight shooting behind Westview Court apartments late Tuesday.

Few details were available. Detectives were trying to obtain more details from the victim.

The Salisbury Police Department said the victim, Juan Jeneiro Mortimer, 23, was behind the complex, 338 Mahaley Ave., just before 11 p.m. He’d been shot in the stomach and pistol-whipped on the head.

He was staying with two people who live at the complex. Police officials say Mortimer was transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he is in critical but stable condition.

Police have no description of a suspect. Officers were not able to speak with Mortimer.

“We can’t say at this point whether it’s random,” said police Capt. Shelia Lingle.

Neighbors told police they heard only one gunshot.
