Staff report
Davie County took a one-run lead into the fifth inning Tuesday night against North Mecklenburg, but the War Eagles’ season ended with a 3-1 loss in the second round of the 4A playoffs.
Bret Peterson’s fly ball to deep center field scored Tyler Seaford, running for pitcher Zach Russell-Myers, to give Davie County a 1-0 lead in the third inning. But that lead disappeared when North Meck got a two-run, bases-loaded line drive to center in the bottom of the inning.
North Meck (21-4) added the final run on a solo home run in the sixth.
Russell-Myers pitched a complete game and surrendered only five hits in an error-free game, but the War Eagles (16-9) couldn’t give him enough run support because they kept stranding runners on base.
“It was close all the way,” Davie coach Mike Herndon said. “We had opportunities in the sixth and seventh, had runners. We just didn’t get the key hit.
“That was the thing รณ we left a lot of runners on. We had opportunities. That was the difference.”
