Symphony board
The Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society members have elected a new class for its board of directors.
The Class of 2011 includes new members Dr. Sarah Hensley, Mary James, Esther Marioneaux, Dr. Ronald D. Smith and Jean Wurster.
Current members who have agreed to serve another three-year term are Dr. Catrelia Hunter and Kim Shuping.
Other new members to the board of directors are Dr. Herman Felton, vice president for Institutional Advancement at Livingstone College, and Chris Ferguson, principal trombone with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra.
Susan Trivette has stepped off the board in order to take on the responsibilities of the Symphony’s education director, beginning this summer.
Bays Shoaf will continue as president of the board. He will be assisted by Betty Mickle, vice president, Greg Alcorn, secretary, and Cynthia Thomas, treasurer.
Other volunteers serving on the board include Dr. Paul Capito, Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, Dotty Clement, Bob Clement, Dr. Sam Fort, Bill Graham, Darius Hedrick, Elizabeth Kaufmann, Dr. Faleese Moore-Jenkins, Libby Summersett, Traci Rudisell and Eric Slipp.Debbie Elliott, president of the Symphony Guild, represents the fund-raising group of the Symphony Society.
A board picnic is scheduled for Sunday, June 1 at the home of Bud and Betty Mickle to welcome new members and salute retiring members Gayle Brinson, Dr. Robert Heffern, Dr. Jean Owen, Robert Pruehsner, Ashley Shoaf and Ms. Donnie Jefferson.
Piano student honors
Two piano students of Marsha K. Carter recently performed at the N.C. Music Teachers’ Association State Festival.
Iris Faggart, daughter of Jeffrey and Danielle Faggart of Kannapolis, played in the Raleigh Contest ó East at Meredith College.
David Freeze, son of Laird and Merri Jo Freeze of Salisbury, was a participant in the State Contest ó West held at Wingate University in Wingate.
Both students were required to play three memorized pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary repertoire chosen from the NCMTA list. To qualify for the state festival, students must receive a superior honor rating at the district level competition held at Catawba College in March.
Toastmasters Division C Governor Jim Rhine presented awards to two Goldmine Toastmasters members at the Division level of competition in International Speech and Table Topic Contests on Saturday, April 26.
Bill Battermann won the International Speech contest and Sam Mullis placed second in Table Topics. The next level will be the district competition in May.
Goldmine Toastmasters is pleased to welcome new members Belinda Dublin, Jennie Brasefield and Kirk Carr. Winners at the club level during April were: Best Speakers ó Betty Walker, Sohail Niaze and Kim Jackson. Matthey Charity, Kim Jackson and John Shepherd were awarded Best Evaluators and Best Table Topics went to Bill Battermann, Alex Porter and Betty Walker.
