SALISBURY — Police say a mother and her 11-year-old daughter got into a hair pulling altercation after the girl asked her mother to wash her dirty school uniform, authorities said.

The incident came to the attention of Salisbury Police after someone called 911 and hung up the phone. The 911 dispatcher heard arguing in the background. A man met police at the door of the South Oakhurst Drive home just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The man told police the woman, later identified as Tievette Marie Wimbley, had gotten into a fight with her daughter. When police approached, the child was carrying her backpack. The officer asked the girl what happened and she told them it began when she asked her mother if she would wash her dirty school uniforms.

The mother told the child no. The girl asked her mother if she wanted her to go to school in dirty uniforms, to which the mother said yes. The girl told her mother, “that’s messed up” and went to her bedroom.

The mother followed the girl and the two began to argue. Police said Wimbley grabbed her daughter by the hair and dragged her around the room. The girl responded by pulling on her mother’s hair in hopes the mother would let go. According to a report, Wimbley got on top of the girl and pressed on her chest with her forearm.

Wimbley punched the girl in the neck during the scuffle.

The child did have red marks on her body, said Police Capt. Melonie Thompson.

When police asked Wimbley what occurred she told them her daughter was being disrespectful. She told police the girl called her bad names in front of the other children.

The man corroborated that the mother, Tievette Wimbley, was the aggressor in the altercation. Rowan Social Services was called and is conducting its own investigation.

Wimbley has since been released under a $1,000 secured bond.
