High Point University students attend inauguration

HIGH POINT — Twelve High Point University students, led by Dr. Brandon Lenoir, assistant professor of political communication, attended the 58th presidential inauguration.
The group was composed of students who represent a spectrum of political ideologies and party affiliations, including presidents of both the college Republicans and college Democrats.
Before they left, students shared their appreciation for the opportunity to attend the nation’s peaceful transfer of power and to be involved in the democratic process.
“High Point University is an amazing school. At no other institution would I have found such driven professors who are willing to put in the time and work to give their students incredible opportunities,” said Asheville native Heather Frankel. “Being an HPU student has allowed me to travel to both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, and now through the school, I witness(ed) a major moment in history.”
“It is truly an honor to get to attend such a historic event with fellow High Point University students,” said Joy Furlipa of Lexington. “Through this opportunity, we will witness this pivotal transition transpire first-hand while our families and friends will be watching at home.”
“I can’t wait to see the reaction of the students,” said Lenoir. “For many, this was be the first time they have visited Washington, D.C., and for all it was their first inauguration. It will be an experience of a lifetime.”
The group returned Jan. 21 to begin working on articles, blog posts and other projects in an effort to bring their experience back to the university family and local community.
