Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone women end slide

SALISBURY — Livingstone snapped a four-game losing skid with a dominating, 101-59 victory over St. Andrews here Friday afternoon at New Trent Gym.

The Blue Bears (4-7) scored at least 28 points in each quarter but the third en route to the easy non-conference win.

Livingstone led the Knights (4-8) at halftime, 58-27. After scoring just 12 points in the third period, the Blue Bears returned to form and scored 31 points in the final quarter.

Junior guard Deonna Young had a huge game for Livingstone, hitting 11-of-15 shots from the floor on her way to 26 points. She was also 4-of-6 from the foul line and grabbed five rebounds.

Young was followed by Brittany Taylor and Zena Lovette, each scoring 19 points. Lovette also had eight rebounds.

Bria Patterson scored 13 points for the Blue Bears and Shannon Buchanan added 12.

Victoria Washington led St. Andrews with 16 points.

Livingstone returns to home action on Monday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m.

College men’s hoops

BLUEFIELD — Pfeiffer guard Andrew Guerrero put on a shooting clinic while Pfeiffer’s pressure defense confounded Bluefield State in a 112-79 victory on Friday.

Guerrero’s 18 points at intermission were the result of  perfect  shooting. For the game he shot 10-for-12 from the field (5-for-6 from 3-point range) and went 3-for-3 at the charity stripe.  He finished with 28 points and five steals.

Tre Williams (Carson) scored 16 points for Claflin on Thursday in a 100-79 win against Shaw.

Williams went 9-for-11 from the foul line. He had four rebounds and two steals.

Prep hoops

Hickory Ridge edged Ardrey Kell in girls basketball on Friday.

Nia Daniel scored 13 points, Gabby Smith had 12, and Jiera Shears scored 10 for the Ragin’ Bulls.

  Journey Muhammad scored 17 for the Knights (10-3).

Lavar Batts Jr. scored 35 points as Robinson beat   Cannon, 86-75, on Friday.

Batts Jr. and Jamari Roberts made all-tournament at the John Wall tournament.

College football

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.   — Deondre Francois threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nyquan Murray with 36 seconds remaining, and No. 10 Florida State beat No. 6 Michigan 33-32 in a wild Orange Bowl on Friday night.

Francois threw for two scores — both to Murray — and ran for another for the Seminoles (10-3). They got 145 yards rushing from Dalvin Cook and recovered after wasting a 12-point lead midway through the fourth.

Chris Evans had a 30-yard touchdown run and Khalid Hill an 8-yard scoring catch in the final minutes for Michigan (10-3), which also got a defensive conversion when Josh Metellus ran a blocked extra point back after the second Francois-Murray TD.

But Michigan turned the ball over on its final possession.

, and the Seminoles held on to win a game where the teams combined for 23 points and two lead changes in the final 5:22.

Evans’ scoring run put the Wolverines up 30-27, but Florida State’s Keith Gavin swung momentum back to the Seminoles with a 66-yard kickoff return right up the middle — setting up the drive where his team would take the lead for good.

Michigan played without injured star linebacker Jabrill Peppers, and lost tight end Jake Butt to what appeared to be a knee injury early in the second quarter.
