Chris Smith (West Rowan, Arkansas) made four tackles for Jacksonville in a 27-21 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Smith had one tackle for loss and two hits on QBs.
Smith (6-3, 269) was drafted by the Jaguars in the fifth round in 2014.
He’s made 15 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, in his first two seasons.

Craig Brooks (Catawba) threw two scoreless innings for Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
Brooks is 4-1 this season, while pitching in A ball (South Bend, Ind.) and advanced A (Myrtle Beach).
He’s struck out 64 in 54 innings with a 3.48 ERA.

Jordan Jankowski (Catawba) had an outstanding relief outing on Thursday for the Fresno Grizzlies, Houston’s Triple-A team, and could be a September callup for the Astros.
Jankowski, 27, is 2-2 with a 3.64 ERA. He’s struck out 89 in 64 innings, while walking 26.

The Tigers announced that they have designated right-hander Bobby Parnell for assignment and selected the contract of veteran outfielder Alex Presley from Triple-A Toledo. Parnell’s DFA creates a spot on the 40-man roster for Presley, and he’ll be added to the big league roster at the expense of outfielder Steven Moya, who has been optioned back to Toledo, per the club.

Parnell, 31, has pitched this year with Detroit and Triple-A Toledo.

Jerry Sands (Catawba) has been hitting well for Charlotte lately.
He had two more hits on Saturday to raise his batting average to .237. Sands has batted. 381 in his last 10 games. He’s hit eight homers for the Knights.

KANNAPOLIS— Danny Dopico and three other pitchers combined for a shutout as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the West Virginia Power 4-0 on Saturday.
Dopico (2-0) picked up the win after he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Dario Agrazal (7-11) went seven innings in the South Atlantic League game.
The Kannapolis staff recorded its 10th shutout.

College basketball
Barber-Scotia coach Marvin Dixon announced the signing of former West Rowan Falcon Tomas (Valle) Caballero.

College baseball
William Miller (NW Cabarrus) completed his career at Albany University and graduated with a business degree.

Prep volleyball
West Rowan opened the season with a sweep of North Rowan in varsity and jayvee. Tori Hester led the West varsity with 12 kills. Ava Link had eight aces.
Conference games start in the SPC this week. West Rowan hosts Robinson on Tuesday.
