Catawba baseball is planning a fundraising “First Pitch Dinner” for Jan. 22.
Cocktail hour is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Dinner and featured speaker Marty Brennaman, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Brennaman started his Hall of Fame broadcasting career in Salisbury. He’s been the voice of the Cincinnati Reds since 1974.
The event will be held at the Robertson College-Community Center on the Catawa campus.
Proceeds will help support the 2016 season
R.S.V.P. by January 15, 2016. Tickets are $75 per person.

Catawba women lose
It was just one of those days for the Catawba women, who shot brilliantly against Carson-Newman on Wednesday but couldn’t buy a bucket against Anderson on Saturday.
Catawba (4-7, 1-4 SAC) made only 12 field goals in the SAC basketball contest, shot 19.4 percent from the floor and got clobbered 64-36 by the unbeaten visitors.
Catawba shot 22.2 percent in the first half to dig a 36-19 hole at the break.
And then it got worse.
Catawba shot 17.1 percent in the second half, missing 29 of 35 field-goal attempts.
Catawba had 19 offensive rebounds but couldn’t do much with them.
Anderson (8-0, 6-0 SAC) shot 56 percent in the first half and 47.3 percent for the game.
Both teams turned the ball over 22 times.
Jennifer Monroe had 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Trojans.
Terri Rogers had eight points and 14 rebounds for the Indians.

Moir pairings

Pairings have been finalized for the girls bracket in the Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic that will be held at Catawba on Dec. 28-30.
Eight games will be played each day. East Rowan’s girls and West Rowan’s boys are the defending champs.
Seeds are based on pre-Christmas records.
Seeds for the girls are: 1. West Rowan (7-0), 2. Carson (8-2), 3. Salisbury (7-3), 4. North Rowan (5-4), 5. Davie (6-5), 6, East Rowan (5-5), 7. Mooresville (3-6) and 8. South Rowan (2-8).
First-round girls matchups on Monday, Dec. 28, will be Salisbury vs. East Rowan at 9 a.m., Carson vs. Mooresville at noon, West Rowan vs. South Rowan at 3 p.m., and North Rowan vs. Davie at 6 pm.

Boys pairings haven’t been finalized as Davie plays Monday against Atkins. That result will affect the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds.
Salisbury (9-1) has earned the top seed. North Rowan (7-2) will be seeded second. West Rowan (4-4) will be sixth. East Rowan (1-9) will be the No. 7 seed, and South Rowan (0-10) will be seeded eighth.
Davie (6-3) will be seeded No. 3 if it wins Monday and will be No. 5 if it loses.
Mooresville (6-3) will be seeded No. 3 if Davie loses.
Carson (6-4) will be either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed. Carson wins a tiebreaker with Davie if they both are 6-4. Carson beat Davie early in the season.
Daily admission charges are $8 per day for adults and $5 for ages 5-17.
Tournament passes will be sold for $20.

Salisbury is second to Carrboro in the 2A statewide standings for overall athletic excellence.

College football
Junior Devin Mason (South Rowan) recently completed his third football season at Guilford.
A defensive lineman, heappeared in all 10 games for the Quakers,.
He totaled 13 tackles, six solo and seven assisted. Mason ranked fifth on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss and had two sacks.
Coach Chris Rusiewicz’s Quakers enjoyed the best season in school history with a 9-1 record (6-1 ODAC).

Women’s hoops
Richmond’s Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) played well in a 73-59 loss to Appalachian State on Thursday in Boone.
Wike shot 3-for-3 and scored six points She had seven rebounds and three blocks in 19 minutes.
• Two Rowan girls were on opposing teams in a D-I game on Saturday, as Morehead State took on Kennesaw State.
Morehead State won 83-77.
Shay Steele (West Rowan) had eight points and two blocks for Morehead State.
Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) scored 20 points. She made four 3-pointers.

LC hoops
Livingstone’s men’s basketball team romped 106-69 against Fort Valley State on Saturday.
The Blue Bears shot 56.3 percent and made 10 3-pointers.
Eric Dubose scored 26 points on 11-for-14 shooting. Nasir Austin added 14 points.

Softball camp
The Catawba softball team will be holding an advanced camp on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 18.
The camp will be held at Whitley Field on the Catawba campus from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The cost of the camp is $100. Each participant is asked to bring cleats as well as turf shoes.
