Area Sports Briefs: Rowan, South Rowan roll on road

Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team crushed Greensboro 18-2 in seven innings on Tuesday in Area III league play.
After two bases-loaded walks, Rowan trailed 2-0 after an inning of the game at Page High School.
John Owen drove in the run that tied the game at 2-all, and Rowan (6-4, 2-0) rolled from there against the winless hosts.
Hunter Shepherd had a base hit with the bases loaded in the sixth, and an outfield error cleared the bases on the play for an 11-2 lead. Starting pitcher Riley Myers walloped a grand slam for a 15-2 lead during Rowan County’s seven-run seventh.
• Southern Rowan trailed 4-2 early at Mocksville but stormed back to take a 12-4 decision.
Matt Honeycutt and Jake Pritchard had RBIs in the fourth as Southern Rowan tied the game 4-all.
Honeycutt’s run-scoring double gave Southern Rowan the lead, and a hit by Pritchard made it 6-4.
Matt Saul hit a two-run homer and Eric Stowe had a run-scoring double as Southern Rowan (7-5, 2-1) pulled away.
Blake Johnson pitched deep into the game for the win. Dylan Snider and Tanner Christy finished up.

Intimidators
Shortstop Eddy Alvarez and catcher Brett Austin were selected to represent Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game on June 23
The Kannapolis players will be members of the Northern Division squad in the game at McCormick Field in Asheville.

Minor leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered for the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday in a 7-4 International League loss to Louisville.
Sands went 2-for-4 and walked twice.
He’s batting .280 for Columbus with six homers.
• Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) has spent the maximum 30 days in the minors on a rehab assignement and is expected to be activated by the New York Mets this week.
Parnell is 14 months removed from Tommy John surgery.

Basketball camps
Former Pfeiffer All-American Damien Argrett (South Rowan) will be instructing at the Summer Jam Basketball Camp at South Rowan YMCA.
The camp is for grades 3-8.
Session 1: June 15-18
Session 2: August 10-13th
The cost is $90 for Y Members and $100 for non-members.
• West Rowan basketball camps are set for June 15-17 and July 13-15.
The cost of a camp is $50 and includes first-class instruction and a camp T-shirt.

Local golf
Sixty-two GARS members played in foursomes at Crescent on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was John Hooper with a net of 60.78. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Buddy Barger with a net of 59.92.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Bobby Wagoner with a net of 60.60.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Perrell with a net of 58.60.
• The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played in a low gross, low net event on Tuesday.
Flight winners: First Flight: 1st Gross — Kristi Laton, 1st Net — Azalee Story; Second Flight, 1st Gross — Susan Wydner, 1st Net — Eileen Full; Third Flight, 1st Gross — Monica Green, 1st Net — Norma Burgess.

East baseball camp
East Rowan Baseball camp dates are June 15-20.
Times: 9-2 on Monday-Thursday and 9-12 on Friday. The cost is $125. Lunch will be provided on Friday. Campers bring lunch the other days. Each camper receives a free T-shirt
Competition on Friday with medals to the winner.
Campers get a video of their hitting and fielding.

NCHSAA
Jordan Harris of Enka and Max Wotell of Marvin Ridge High won the Performance of the Week awards.
Harris, was named MVP of the 3-A softball championship as Enka finished a perfect season.
Wotell was MVP of the 3A baseball championship, leading Marvin Ridge to the crown. He struck out eight and fired a one-hit shutout in the opening game of a best-of-three series as the Mavericks won 2-0 over Pikeville Charles B. Aycock. It was his 14th pitching victory.
Wotell was named the Gatorade North Carolina Baseball Player of the Year. He has committed to the University of Arizona although he also was a high pick in the MLB draft.

All-YVC
Albemarle’s Jay Andrew ws named Golfer of the Year for the YVC West.
Gray Stone’s Dray Smith, Adam Habeeb, Reid Huckabee, Will Casmus and Ryan Eudy were all-conference.
Gray Stone’s Gregg McCollister was the coach of the year for YVC West.
