The women of the Xi Delta Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, a service sorority, have fond memories of their late sorority sister, Vicky Buchanan.
Since her 1999 death, the women have contributed to the Christmas Happiness Fund in her memory.
The Christmas Happiness fund began 60 years ago and provides Rowan County families in need a way to purchase presents for their children.
The program is sponsored by the Salisbury Post, which accepts contributions. The Rowan County Department of Social Services distributes vouchers to eligible families.
There are 10 women who are part of the sorority who’ve been friends for more than 20 years.
Buchanan died following complications to lupus, an auto-immune disorder.
Buchanan was the person who cheered up others, and although she was sick she never stopped moving, said friend Linda Tutterow.
The women and their spouses would annually go on road trips together. Tutterow recalled the last trip the group took 13 years ago to Valle Crucis. The trip was in August, three months before Buchanan died. Five of the women attended the trip.
“We had such a good time. We laughed all weekend,” Tutterow said.
The women still talk about that unforgettable trip.
“We still take trips. We go to the beach every year. We go in the fall with our husbands and in spring with just the girls,” she said.
One of the things Tutterow will remember about Buchanan is her hats.
“She liked to wear hats,” Tutterow said.
Buchanan couldn’t be in the sun because of lupus, but she had more bathing suits than any of the other women, she said.
