ROWAN COUNTY — One man was injured on Saturday night after leading police on a chase throughout eastern Rowan County, ending when he crashed and was ejected from his car.

The incident began at approximately 8:30 p.m. in downtown Rockwell, when an officer noticed a car driving at a high rate of speed along U.S. Highway 52, said Rockwell Police Chief Cody Trexler. The officer reportedly clocked the vehicle at speeds of over 100 mph in the 35 mph zone.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, at which point the driver continued speeding east out of town, Trexler said. The officer reportedly chased the vehicle to Wyatt Grove Church Road, approximately seven miles northeast of Rockwell. There, the driver lost control of his vehicle, running off of the road into a nearby field. The car continued off of the road for approximately 75 feet before crashing, at which point the man was ejected from the vehicle, Trexler said.

The man was reportedly alert and talking to the emergency responders treating him. He was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in unknown condition.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
