High school baseball: Wonders upset Hickory Ridge in GMC tourney

HARRISBURG — A seventh-place finish by A.L. Brown’s baseball team in the seven-team 4A Greater Metro Conference was frustrating, but not discouraging.

The Wonders  (8-15) have a number of good players and put it all together on Monday in the first round of the league tournament. The Wonders won 9-6 against second-seeded Hickory Ridge.

Hickory Ridge (13-11) pounded the Wonders 12-0 and 11-1 in March.

CJ Gray had a terrific night. He had a homer, triple and double in his three official at-bats. He also was the winning pitcher.

Mason Cook went 4-for-4. Jakeb Johnson had two hits, including a homer.

Drew Ryan earned a save.

Next for the Wonders is third-seeded South Iredell.

South Iredell beat West Cabarrus 7-2 in the first round.

Fourth-seeded Lake Norman beat fifth-seeded Mooresville 9-3.  Cox Mill, the No. 1 seed, had a first-round bye.

A.L. Brown’s softball team ended its season with a 14-5 tournament loss to Lake Norman.

The Wonders (5-15) were in it a long time, but the Wildcats got the bats going in the fifth and sixth.

Emmy David and Kaylee Dunning had two RBIs each. Mady Baker had two hits.
