Area sports briefs: West wins in baseball, tennis; Salisbury wins in soccer, tennis; lots of track winners

OLIN — West Rowan’s baseball team owns a six-game winning streak after beating North Iredell 6-0 in Thursday’s non-conference game.

Maddox Moore and Alex Hagler combined on the shutout for the Falcons (16-4).

Moore struck out six in five innings. Hagler fanned three in two innings.

Eli Graham had three hits and scored two runs. Drew Burton had two hits and three RBIs.

Cole Blevins had two hits. Gage Scruggs had two RBIs. Brant Graham had a double.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s girls won Thursday’s five-team meet at East.

East scored 129 points to top Lake Norman Charter (86), West Rowan (61), West Stanly (39) and Carson (28).

Savannah Wose won the 100 (13.4) and the 200 (27.44). Sadie Featherstone won the 100 hurdles (17.12) and the 300 hurdles (49.71).

Jasmyne Brown won the pole vault (7-6). Lelu Hill won the long jump (16-4). Iyanna Lynch Berry won the triple jump (33-9).

East won the 4×200.

Carson’s Cadi Joyner won the high jump (4-8).

West Rowan’s Skyy Ruben won the discus (99-10) and shot put (32-5.5). Katie Roberts won the 1600 (6:28) and 3200 (13:52).

West Rowan’s boys scored 90 points and tied with Lake Norman Charter for first place.

Next were West Stanly (63), East Rowan (63) and Carson (62).

West Rowan won the 4×800 relay (9:00.32) and got individual wins from Brennon Stevenson in the 400 (52.30) and Connor Heath in the 300 hurdles (43.93).

East winners were Christian Seballos in the pole vault (9-0) and Jordan Brooks in the triple jump (42-6).

Carson got firsts from Damir Miller in the high jump (6-4) and James Anderson in the 1600 (4:43).

SALISBURY — Salisbury’s boys track team won Thursday’s four-team meet at Livingstone College.

The Hornets totaled 99.5 points to top Lexington (30.5), Thomasville (15) and South Rowan (6).

Salisbury won the 4×100 and 4×200.

Ethan Griffin won the long jump (19-10.5) and high jump (5-6).

Tyree Brown won the triple jump (40-7.5). Landon Joyner won the 100 hurdles (19.23).

Deuce Walker won the 100 (10.97). Xavier Boileau won the 1600 (5:23). Jamal Rule won the 400 (49.32). Zahir Brown won the 300 hurdles (43.33).

Samuel Fatovic won the 800 (2:03.68). Finnegan Avery won the 3200 (11:11).

In the girls meet, Salisbury won with 50 points. South Rowan was second with 35. Lexington scored 31. while Thomasville had six.

The Hornets won the 4×100 and 4×400.

Millie Wymbs won the 400 (1:01.93). Tai’lah Ward won the 300 hurdles (44.02). Shakiya Woodruff won the 200 (27.13). Alyrica Abel won the long jump (13-3.5).

South Rowan winners were Mesiayah Howell in the 100 (12.82), Madalynn Gulledge in the 800 (2:34.5), Blythe Elliott in the 3200 (14:38). Macy Miller in the high jump (5-2) and Clancy Street in the shot put (26-8).

 

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

LEXINGTON — Salisbury bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to West Davidson to beat Central Carolina Conference opponent Lexington 7-0 on Thursday.

“We overcame a slow start, fatigue and heat to pick up the victory,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “All 16 girls got valuable minutes on the field, and we worked to build on the positives of the last two weeks.”

Maddie Crabb scored two goals. Stephany Quintero, Addie Griffith, Meredith Williams, Brianna Figueroa Escobar and Lola Koontz scored goals.

Koontz and Williams scored their first goals of the season for the Hornets (8-3-1, 6-2).

Figueroa Escobar, a senior in her first year in the program and the starting goalkeeper, scored her first career goal.

 Jamilet Figueroa, Quintero, Griffith, Escobar, Crabb and Williams had assists.

“Quintero played a very unselfish match and got a lot of teammates involved,” Parrish said.

The defense of Stella Koontz, Lola Koontz, Luna Nunez Velazquez, Emma Ott, Lexi Castellon, Briana Rivas Pacheco and keepers Briana Figueroa Escobar and Taylor Brown combined for the shutout.

Salisbury plays at South Davidson on Monday at 6 p.m.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

WALLBURG — Salisbury won 8-1 at Ledford in Thursday’s non-conference match.

‘They were a really solid team and it wasn’t an easy win, Salisbury coach Roarke Burton said.

AJ Jarrell, Gray Davis, Bryant Davis, Reid Hlavacek and Ben Lawson won singles matches for the Hornets (15-1).

Soyer Cornelison lost a close match at No. 5 singles.

Jarrell/Gray Davis, Hlavacek/Cornelison and Bryant Davis/Lawson were doubles winners.

Ledford is 8-5.

Salisbury wraps the regular season on Monday with a Senior Night Central Carolina Conference game against second-place West Davidson.

The CCC tournament will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday.

CONCORD — West Rowan closed the regular season with a 6-3 South Piedmont Conference win against Central Cabarrus.

The Falcons (7-9, 7-9) got singles wins from Sam Gulledge, Jackobe Gardner, Isaiah Wood and Callen Batts.

Doubles winners were Dylan Parrish/Max Brown and Wood/Batts.

 

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Sam Goodman shot 36 to lead Salisbury in Thursday’s non-conference match at McCanless.

Jackson Sparger (37), Drew Aron (37) and Jacob Trainor (38) were the other scorers.

Salisbury finished second in a non conference match today at McCanless with a score of 148 Sam Goodman (36), Jackson Sparger (37), Drew Aron (37), Jacob Trainor (38).

 

LOCAL GOLF

Steve McIntyre made a hole-in-one at Corbin Hills on Wednesday.

McIntyre used a 3-iron on the 145-yard No. 2 hole to make his first ace.

The shot was witnessed by Steve Gegorek, Roger Lyerly, Barry Medinger and Grey Medinger.
