Area Sports Briefs: Honeycutt hits 50th bomb for Tar Heels

Former Salisbury star Vance Honeycutt hit the 50th home run of his career for UNC baseball in Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to Coastal Carolina.

Honeycutt is only the second Tar Heel to reach 50 career home runs and is the first to record 50 homers while also surpassing 50 steals.

He’s the first ACC player to record 50 homers and 60 steals.

Devy Bell, who played in the 1980s, is recognized as UNC’s all-time home run leader with 57. Chris Cox (49), Chad Flack (42), Sean Farrell (40) and Jarrett Shearin (40) are the others who hit 40 or more.

Catawba lost to UNC Pembroke 5-3 in 11 innings on Tuesday in a game played at Atrium Health Ballpark.

Catawba led 3-0 going to the seventh, but UNCP rallied in the late innings and sent the game to extras.

Levi Perrell had three hits for the Indians. Ty Hubbard, Sam Hunter and Perrell had RBIs.

Catawba used six pitchers in the battle of ranked teams. Carson Edmiston took the loss.

Catawba heads to Coker for a weekend series.

Steven Smith (West Rowan) homered on Saturday and Sunday for Emory & Henry, his third and fourth of the season.

Bryson Wagner (East Rowan) got his second win of the season for Emory & Henry on Sunday.

 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Catawba won 5-1 and 6-1 against Limestone in South Atlantic Conference games played on Tuesday.

Kary Hales and Brianna Herring hit home runs in the first game.

Catawba got strong pitching efforts from Riley Tucker and Herring.

 

COLLEGE TENNIS

Former Carson players Alison Sloop and Riley Isley have helped Pfeiffer win five straight matches.

They teamed for a No. 2 doubles win and also won their individual matches on Sunday against Virginia Wesleyan.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Newberry announced Johnette Walker as its new women’s basketball head coach.

She’s been an assistant at Francis Marion the past five seasons. She played at Radford.

 

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

The Pfeiffer University men’s track and field team competed in the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic in Lynchburg, Va.

The men’s 4×400 relay team  broke the Pfeiffer school record with a time of 3:27.03 to finish sixth overall. The team of freshmen consisted of Andrew Huffman (Salisbury), Jose Baez, Marques Smith, and Shevaun Daley.

Cameron Ritchie (East Rowan) grabbed a pair of top-10 finishes, claiming third in the 400m hurdles and seventh overall in 110m hurdles. His time in 400m hurdles was the second-fastest time in Pfeiffer history.

Pfeiffer will next turn its focus to the USA South Outdoor Track and Field Championships on April 26-27 in Concord.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

South Rowan distance runner Grayson Cromer committed to run for East Tennessee.

South’s boys were fourth in Tuesday’s track meet at Concord, that also included Robinson, Central Cabarrus and Northwest Cabarrus.

South’s girls placed second in that meet and had several winners.

Mesiyah Howell won the 200 (26.03). Madison Beaver won the 3200 (14:02). Macy Miller won the high jump (5-4).

South also won the 4×800 relay in 11:10.

 

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

East Rowan (9-6, 9-6) has been the strongest Rowan team in the South Piedmont Conference this season.

After taking a 5-4 win against Robinson on Monday, the Mustangs lost 6-3 to second-place Northwest Cabarrus on Tuesday.

Thomas Stokes and Will Kesler won tough singles matches for the Mustangs.

Owen Kesler/Blake Mathews won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

 

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

Brooke Oehler and Ava Schleyer scored goals for South Rowan in Tuesday’s 2-1 South Piedmont Conference victory against Carson.

Holly DiStefano had an assist. Margo Maples made four saves.

Lexlyth Sotelo scored for the Cougars. Haylee Feehan had the assist.

Mia Cruz made 11 saves.

 

LOCAL GOLF

GARS members played at Warrior on Monday.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 60.58. ‘Low B’ Flight player was Dan Newell with a net of 59.53.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Joe Dunn with a net of 59.09. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Gary Stevenson with a net of 58.75.

Petrea shot a 1-under 70 to win low gross, while Stevenson won low net.

Tom Longo was Super Senior with a net of 59.20.

Two eagles were made. Petrea eagled the par-5 No. 4 hole. Newell eagled the par-4 No. 9 hole.

Six members shot their age or better.

Petrea, 72, shot a 70. Jan Gunter, 77, shot a 73. Gus Andrews, 79, shot a 78. Donald Martin, 80, shot an 80. Joe Dunn, 80, shot 80. Bobby Clark, 84, shot an 83.

The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice event on Sunday.

The team of Crystal Clement, Larry Clifton, Claude Honeycutt and Tim Vanhoy took first place.

Mike Kluttz, Colt Kluttz,  Todd Cleary and Clarence Hobart placed second.

Clement won longest putt.

Azalee Huneycutt had closest to the pin.
