High school baseball roundup: East, West keep winning

GRANITE QUARRY — Catawba recruit Joe Burleyson pitched four strong innings with six strikeouts, as East Rowan clobbered South Iredell 11-2 on Friday afternoon in the Spring Break Tournament at Staton Field.

Burleyson got relief help from Mason Phelps (two innings) and Cobb Hightower.

East took charge right away with three runs in the first and three more in the second.

Nate Hayworth homered for the Mustangs (11-1).

Braden Shive had three hits. Hightower was 2-for-2 with two walks.

Sam Blackwelder had two hits and scored two runs. Logan Dyer and Hunter Goodman had doubles.  Harrison Ailshie drove in two runs.

East, West Rowan and Carson are taking on South Iredell, Northwest Guilford and Mooresville, with three games daily on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

GRANITE QUARRY — Luke Ponczka and freshman Brody Pope hit home runs for West Rowan in an 11-4 win against Mooresville on Friday in the Spring Break Tournament at Staton Field.

Eli Graham pitched into the fourth inning, and Cole Blevins was able to put up zeroes when the Falcons (8-3) were clinging to a 5-4 lead.

GRANITE QUARRY — In a game moved to Staton Field because of field conditions at Concord, East Rowan clobbered Concord 16-4 in South Piedmont Conference baseball on Thursday.

East’s 0ffensive fun included a 10-run third inning.

Dyer pitched two innings for the Mustangs, while Nate Hayworth threw three.

Krys Hernandez had a double and knocked in five runs for the Mustangs. McCall Henderson had two doubles. Cobb Hightower went 3-for-4 with a double. Hunter Goodman was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Harrison Ailshie scored three runs. Hayworth drove in two.

MOUNT ULLA — Northwest Cabarrus pitcher Dalton Hazlett struck out 11 West Rowan batters, but the Falcons scratched out a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 SPC victory.

The decisive run scored on what looked to be a routine force play at home, but the catcher was deemed to have come off the plate before receiving the throw.

West got strong pitching in tough situations from Alex Hagler and Brant Graham, who held the Trojans to two runs, despite 11 hits by the visitors.

Maddox Moore and Gage Scruggs had doubles for West. Eli Graham had two hits.

The South Rowan-Carson game was postponed on Thursday.

South Rowan and Salisbury are part of the eight-team field for the Easter tourney at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.

Salisbury lost 11-0 to A.L. Brown on Friday and will play in the 10 a.m. game on Saturday.

Mike Geter had a double for the Hornets.

A.L. Brown will play Robinson in a 4 p.m. semifinal.
