College women’s basketball: Two major SAC awards for Catawba’s Thorne

SAC Sports InformationCatawba graduate student Lyrik Thorne has been named South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year,

Catawba’s Terence McCutcheon was named SAC Coach of the Year.

Catawba’s Janiya Downs (South Rowan) made second team, while Sara McIntosh made the third team.

Coker’s Kamari Thompson was voted  SAC Freshman of the Year, Anderson’s Zamiya Passmore is the SAC Newcomer of the Year.

Thorne led the SAC with 20.2 per game, while averaging 4.0 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals.

She ranks first in the region and ninth in the country in scoring, while producing 13 20-point games and four 30-point games, including a season-high 38 points.

Thorne became Catawba’s all-time leading scorer this season, the first to reach 2,000 career points and ranks fifth on the SAC’s all-time scoring list.

McCutcheon picks up his second consecutive Coach of the Year honor. His team won the regular season and is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SAC Basketball Championships, completing the regular season at 22-4 and 17-3 in SAC play. Catawba is ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region
