Ester Marsh: None of us are alike

Too many times, I hear stories from people that they want to do what their friend did because it was successful for them. Surgery, weight loss and physical therapy are just some of the examples that people give. I have had people point out others who are completely different and say, “I want to look like that.”

We all are different and thank goodness for that! Oh yeah, and genetics. Genetically, we are all made up differently and results in whatever you do will be different. A physical therapist can do the exact same therapy after a knee replacement on two different people and most of the time they will have a very different recovery road. The same goes for weight loss. Many of you have started working out with a friend or family member and you are doing the same workout and even the same diet, and the results are still different. It’s frustrating for the ones who feel “left behind.”

I always mention to all people I teach or train, it’s your journey! Focus on your body and your workouts, physical therapy and weight loss. We are starting our Exercise Is Medicine class this week and it truly teaches all the components of healthy living. The class is 12 weeks and we meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-1 p.m. We still have spots available. You need a doctor’s prescription (forms online and at our front desk). Because of a grant from our local United Way, the fee is only $75 for members and $125 for non-members and that does include a membership for 12 weeks (as long you participate in the program). Dr. Kim Smith and I are looking forward to our second session and hope to see you there.

Whether you join us or any other reputable programs, trainers or classes, remember that when your healthy lifestyle begins, there is no end to it. So many people go gung-ho in the beginning of the year and stop within a few months. Slow and steady will do the trick. Small changes progressively. Will you fall off the wagon on your health journey? Yes, you will. Re-group and start again. Before you know it, your body will understand that this is truly a lifestyle change. I recommend logging your information. Write down what you eat and drink each day, how many steps you take and if you have moments of moderate exercise throughout the day. Where your heart rate will be at least 55-70 percent of your max heart rate. Quality over quantity and most of all, one step at a time. Many of you have started this health journey this New Year, and we are there to guide you through the challenges which arise to all. But I know that you can do it.
