SPENCER — North Rowan’s boys basketball team advanced in the 1A state playoffs on Thursday with a 64-58 win against North Stokes.

“We jumped out early, but then we got in foul trouble, they shot a lot of free throws and they got back in it,” North coach Jason Causby said.   

Quashawn Carpenter scored 20 points to lead North Rowan. Denerio Robinson stayed hot with 15 points, and 6-foot-10 Brandon White had 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Zay Davis had eight points and nine rebounds.

“Brandon was a matchup problem for them, and Quashawn continues to shoot well from outside,” Causby said. “Denerio came up big again in the second half.”

The Cavaliers survived an onslaught by North Stokes’ Isaac Wood. The 6-foot guard scored 32 for the Vikings (16-11).

“They were tough to defend,” Causby said. “It was a hard-fought playoff win.”

North Rowan (22-7) will  play at Winston-Salem Prep on Saturday.

North Rowan girls

DAVIDSON — North Rowan’s girls ended a 20-9 season with 66-61 loss at Community School of Davidson in the second round of the 1A playoffs on Thursday.

Sophomore Hannah Wilkerson had a career-high 34 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Cavaliers.

“Hannah played well, but what she wanted was the win,” Coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “The girls worked really hard all year.”

Natavia Taborn had 10 points and five assists. Kamora Cannie had nine points, six assists and five rebounds.

Makiya McDaniel had four points and seven rebounds.Kimya Lynch had two points and five rebounds.  Chloee Stoner scored two points.

A.L. Brown boys

GASTONIA — A.L. Brown’s boys lost at Hunter Huss on Thursday, 97-67, in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

Kheni Briggs scored 17 for the Wonders (18-9). Amari Grier had 12. JD Glenn and DQ Foggie had nine each.

Deneil Mackins  had  21 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Hunter Huss. Tyrese McNeal  and  JJ Moore scored 15 each.  Dontavius Nash had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Salisbury boys

MARSHVILLE — Salisbury’s 17th-seeded boys lost 60-59 to top-seeded and undefeated Forest Hills on Thursday in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.

It was ninth loss for Salisbury (17-10) by three or fewer points.

N. Davidson boys

WELCOME — North Davidson won against Atkins 70-59 on Thursday in the second round of the 2A state playoffs.

Jamarien Dalton had 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Black Knights. Tedric Jenkins scored 14.

  

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s Hunter Shepherd has been named  South Atlantic Conference  Baseball Player of the Week  for the second time this season.

Shepherd, a senior first baseman from Salisbury, batted .389 with three home runs and nine RBIs.

Catawba softball

BELMONT — Jordan Dean hit a two-run homer in the seventh as Catawba won 5-3 at Belmont Abbey in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Kaylee Cook had two hits, including a two-run single. Riley Tucker had two hits. Brooke Walser (2-1) pitched a complete game.

• In the second game, Preston Ellenberg (3-1), who was celebrating a birthday, struck out seven.

Dean, Taylor Martin and Kayla Pedersen had two hits each. Tucker hit a home run.

Catawba golf

HILTON HEAD, S.C.  — Catawba senior Sarah Coltrane finished runner-up at the Battle of Hilton Head women’s golf tournament, losing on the second playoff hole to Tove Rosengren, of Missouri-St. Louis.

As a team, the Catawba Indians were third at the tournament.

Catawba lacrosse

  SALISBURY — Visiting Young Harris took a 7-3 lead after a quarter and held on to top Catwaba 17-13 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

Keegan Maxwell  led Catawba with four goals.

Catawba will host Maryville (Mo.) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Catawba track & field

COLUMBIA, S.C.  —  Catawba posted four school records and netted seven top 10 finishes at the USC Indoor Open Indoor Track and Field Meet.

Madison Lowery (South Rowan) was ninth with a PR in the 3000 meters

Akeena Maxwell (A.L. Brown)   had a PR in the 200 meters

The South Atlantic Conference has four schools ranked in the NCAA Southeast Region women’s Basketball poll.

Catawba moved up two spots to No. 4, followed by Anderson at No. 5, Tusculum at No. 6 and Carson-Newman coming in at No. 7.

SAC men

The South Atlantic Conference has  four schools ranked in the latest NCAA Southeast Region men’s basketball poll.

Lincoln Memorial earned the No. 1 spot in the poll, followed by Queens at No. 3, Catawba at No. 4, and Tusculum at No. 9.

C. Cabarrus girls

CONCORD — Central Cabarrus won 58-45 against Southwest Guilford on Thursday in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Mariah Barrie scored 20 points. Ja’el Miller scored 16, and Aniyah Tate had 13.
