Area Sports: Catawba men win 7th straight

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Make it seven wins in a row for Catawba’s men’s basketball team.

The Indians (18-6, 13-5) led by as many as 23 points and rolled 74-61 at Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon to stay tied for second place.

Catawba shot only 37 percent from the field, but the Indians made 14 3-pointers and committed  only 10 turnovers.

Marcell Haskett made eight 3-pointers and scored 26 points. Daquan Lilly had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Kaleb Wallace scored 17 to lead the Eagles (9-15, 6-12).

Catawba women

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Catawba’s women’s basketball team got down 30-8 after seven minutes and never could fight all the way back in Saturday’s 96-86 loss at Carson-Newman.

Carson-Newman made 10 of its first 15 shots.

Catawba fell out of a tie for first place.

Taisha DeShazo led the Indians with 19 points. Lyrik Thorne had 14 with three 3-pointers, and Shemya Stanback had 13.

Statistically, the Indians (19-4,14-4)  weren’t bad. They shot 45 percent, including 10-for-23 on 3-pointers. They were 20-for-27 from the foul line and made only 10 turnovers.

Carson-Newman (18-6, 14-4) moved up to a tie for second place and has swept the Indians. Braelyn Wykle scored 26 for the Eagles, while Kayla Marosites had 25.

Livingstone men

CHARLOTTE — Johnson C. Smith withstood a 33-point outburst by Roger  Ray and beat rival Livingstone 97-86 at Brayboy Gym on Saturday.

Ray made six 3-pointers and had 10 assists, while playing all 40 minutes.

Lydell Elmore had 22 points and nine boards for the Blue Bears (12-14, 5-10).

The Golden Bulls (17-7, 11-4) got 33 points from Cayse Minor, 23 from Austin Nelson and 20 from Nenad Milenkovic.

Livingstone shot 56.5 percent from the field, but   the Golden Bulls were 30-for-37 on free throws, while Livingstone was 6-for-15.

Livingstone women

CHARLOTTE — Livingstone’s women lost to Johnson C. Smith 58-50 on Saturday at Brayboy Gym in a CIAA contest.

The key stat was dismal 3-for-27 3-point shooting by the Blue Bears. Adel Allen scored 14 to lead the Blue Bears (11-13, 6-9). Victoria Onozie had 13, and Daisa Harris was held to 10.

Le’Zorea Bowens had 18 for the Golden Bulls (16-9, 11-5), who survived 23 turnovers.

3A track

In the 3A track and field state championships held in Winston-Salem on Friday, Carson wheelchair athlete William Fuller won the shot put and was second in the 55 meters.

• Carson’s Iyonna Parker was fifth in the girls shot put with a throw of 35-6 1/4 inches.

1A/2A track

In the 1A/2A indoor track and field state championships held in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Salisbury’s Christian Morgan was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 8.16 seconds.

• South Rowan’s 4×800 boys relay team placed ninth in 8:59.46.

College baseball

SALISBURY — Catawba swept a doubleheader from Shippensburg on Saturday. The Indians (6-2) overcame a 6-0 deficit to win the first game 9-6.

Jackson Raper had four hits, while Hunter Shepherd had three. Jeremy Simpson had a triple and three RBIs. Zack Miller homered. Sawyer Strickland (1-0) got the win in relief. Robbie Cowie got his first save.

• In the second game,  Catawba won 7-2.

Raper homered, doubled and drove in five runs. Shepherd had two hits. Greg Brown (2-1) got the win with five strong innings and eight strikeouts. DJ Laxton got his first save.

College softball

SALISBURY — Catawba’s softball team lost twice to Lees-McRae at Whitley Field on Saturday, falling 2-1 and 6-5.

Riley Tucker homered and went 3-for-3 for the Indians in the first game, but  Catawba (4-2) wasted  six great innings by hurler Brooke Walser.

• In the second game, Catawba  couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead. Allie Baker homered for the Indians. Jordan Dean and Gracie Gibson had two hits each.

JV girls basketball

Carson’s girls (14-3) won 26-12 against South Iredell on Friday and tied for first place.

Riley Isley scored seven. Makayla Johnson had six, and Abbey Nixon scored five. Defensive standouts were Kaalyn Wynn and Allie Burns.

A.L. Brown hoops

A.L. Brown’s boys lost to Cox Mill 97-72 on Friday to close the regular season.

Kheni Briggs led the Wonders with 19 points. Amari Grier (18), JD Glenn (13) and Mi’Keim Moore (12) were in double figures.

• A.L. Brown’s girls lost 56-48  to Cox Mill on Friday. Jaliyah Simmons and Jaliah Smoutherson scored 14 apiece. Jala Campbell scored 13.

Regional wrestling

South Rowan’s Jacob Cox, East Rowan’s Oren Bost and A.L. Brown’s Gavin Hartsell won regional championships on Saturday. The top four wrestlers in  each regional weight class move on to the state tournament in Greensboro.
