Staff report

The second round of the baseball state playoffs, the second round of the softball state playoffs, the individual tennis championships and the release of the NCHSAA playoff brackets for girls soccer all are scheduled for Friday.

The 2A Midwest Regional for track and field is set for Friday at Mount Pleasant, with the other area track and field athletes in regional action on Saturday.

Girls soccer

Salisbury will be in the 2A West bracket for the playoffs. The Hornets are 17th in the 2A West RPI rankings, so they’re on the bubble as far as getting a first-round home game.

Salisbury had hoped to play Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, but that game was canceled.

Carson lost 10-1 to Robinson on Wednesday to finish 3-17-1. The seasons are over for North Rowan, East Rowan, West Rowan and Carson.

South Rowan (9-9, 8-8) is 33rd in the 3A West RPI rankings, so the Raiders, who finished fifth in the South Piedmont Conference, won’t make the playoffs unless something unusual happens to move them up.

Track and field

The 2A Midwest Regional will take place on Friday at Mount Pleasant. Salisbury is expected to do well with athletes such as Deuce Walker, Jamal Rule, Tai’Lah Ward and Mille Wymbs, especially in sprints and relays.

Th1 1A Midwest Regional is at Davie on Friday. North Rowan’s teams are led by thrower Brittany Ellis,  versatile Aniya Brown and hurdler Kemyon Oglesby.

A.L. Brown athletes are in the 4A Midwest Regional at Davie.

South Piedmont Conference athletes will compete at Robinson in the 3A Midwest Regional.

Baseball

East Rowan’s top-seeded Mustangs will play 17th-seeded St. Stephens at Staton Field on Friday.

Logan Dyer is the probable pitcher for the Mustangs, who have lost only once this season.

Carson won a first-round road game at Piedmont and will  play Central Davidson at home on Friday in a 24 vs. 25 matchup in the 3A West bracket. Central Davidson won 1-0 in eight innings on the road at Ashe County.

Maverick Walters is the likely starting pitcher for the Cougars,

Lake Norman Charter from the SPC also is still alive in the 3A playoffs.

Northwest Cabarrus finally played its first-round game on Thursday after two days of postponements but lost to North Davidson 5-1.

Softball

Only one Rowan team will make the third round.

West Rowan moved down and East Rowan moved up in the final day before the seeds were announced for the 3A West playoff bracket.

So they’re now in a 3 vs. 14 matchup in the second round.

West has won 20 times and romped 10-0 in the first round of the playoffs, but the Falcons haven’t been able to beat East, which survived a 1-0 game in the first round.

The Mustangs have handled the Falcons three times, and they’ll get to play on their home field.

First pitch  is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Boys tennis

Salisbury put five in the 2A state tournament at Holly Springs, with singles player Bryant Davis and the doubles teams of AJ Jarrell/Gray Davis and Reid Hlavacek/Soyer Cornelison.

Carson’s doubles team of Karson Sloop/Austin Atwell qualified for the 3A tournament in Burlington.

The tournament start Friday and conclude Saturday.

Boys golf

State championships are set for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Salisbury’s team won the 2A Midwest Regional and will be one of the contenders for state honors at Stonebridge in Monroe.

East Rowan’s Landon Merrell and Jaden Sprinkle and West Rowan’s Tyler Kepley were individual qualifiers for the 3A state event at Longleaf in Southern Pines.
