Area athletes update …

Host UNC Greensboro took the Grandover Collegiate fall golf tournament on Monday, winning by nine shots over Rutgers.

Junior Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) was the individual medalist, shooting 69-73-71 to win by three strokes. It’s the fourth college tournament victory for Lyerly.

Lyerly got off to a great start in the tournament and was 5-under after nine holes.

Salisbury native Michael Childress (Cannon School) shot 69-74-75 for 15th place in the Steelwood Invitational. He was the top golfer for Richmond.

FOOTBALL

Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds (Davie) led the 49ers to a 39-38 win against North Texas on Saturday night.

The 49ers were down two touchdowns going to the fourth quarter. Reynolds threw the game-winning touchdown pass with 18 seconds left.

Reynolds was 24-for-32 passing for 336 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran eight times for 96 yards and a score.

Reynolds received a number of accolades for the best performance of his college career, including Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week.

In Gardner-Webb’s 49-47 overtime loss to Campbell, Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) rushed 28 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. Cagle added four receptions for 39 yards.

Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) rushed 13 times for 39 yards and a touchdown for Army on Saturday in a 34-29 loss to San Jose State. McCoy had scored two TDs the previous week against Georgia State.

Kacey Otto (West Rowan) threw a 70-yard touchdown pass in St. Andrews’ 48-28 loss to Reinhardt on Saturday.

In Averett’s 41-35 loss to Huntingdon on Saturday, JaVon Lofton (West Rowan) made three tackles and was credited with half of a sack. Jaleel Webster (North Rowan) carried five times for 14 yards. Ka’seim Black (A.L. Brown) had four tackles, intercepted a pass and had a breakup.

In Saturday’s 41-10 loss to Methodist, Greensboro’s Nautica Patterson (North Rowan) made five tackles, including one for a loss of 10 yards. He also had a pass breakup.

Teoz Mauney (West Rowan) had five tackles as St. Augustine’s upset Fayetteville State, 23-21, in a CIAA game on Saturday.

It was a rough day for Minnesota Crookston in an 81-0 loss to Minnesota State, but Wesley Jefferies (North Rowan) made three tackles.

Eric Gibson (North Rowan) made four tackles for Catawba in Saturday’s 55-28 loss to Mars Hill. Christian Bennett (East Rowan) made a tackle for the Indians.

Injuries kept Brenden Westbrook (Carson) and Steven Thurston (North Rowan) out of the action.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Baleigh Hill (East Rowan) had 12 digs in Barton’s 3-1 win against Mount Olive on Saturday.

Queens’ Lindsay Elmore (Carson) had three kills, three blocks and three aces in a sweep of Coker on Saturday. Elmore had two solo blocks and five block assists in Thursday’s loss to Wingate.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Sean Incardona (East Rowan) ran a 26:54 8K and was 20th in the South Atlantic Conference Championships held on Saturday at Wingate.

Catawba’s Madison Lowery (South Rowan) was 13th in the 6K women’s race in 23:06. She was Catawba’s second runner and made all-conference.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Faith Faller (East Rowan) was 32nd in 24:26.

 

SWIMMING

Ethan Knorr (Salisbury) finished second in the 1000 freestyle and helped East Carolina top UNC Wilmington.
