Area Sports: West tops East in NPC soccer

West Rowan’s boys soccer team won 5-0 against East Rowan in the North Piedmont Conference opener for both teams on Monday.
Aleksis Suarez scored two goals, while Douglas Menjivar, Luis Vasquez and Joseph Turcios had one each. Vasquez and Michael Leon had two assists each. Jose Mejia had one.
Chris Mercado made three saves.

Oswald Ortiz scored for Carson in a 9-1 NPC loss to North Iredell on Monday.
HS volleyball
Carson (12-3) swept A.L. Brown 25-15, 25-4 and 25-7 in non-conference action on Monday.
West Davidson swept Salisbury 25-10, 26-24 and 25-22 in a CCC match on Monday.
HS girls golf
Oak Grove shot 112 to win Monday’s Central Carolina Conference golf match at Winding Creek.
Ledford’s Lauren Hackler was medalist with a 36.
Phoebe Shields (56) led Salisbury (174).
Local golf
In the American Legion Golf Tournament held at Corbin Hills, First Flight winners were Kip Honeycutt, Randy Bingham, Terry Mulkey and Tim Wheet with a 55.
Second Flight Winners were Wayne Kluttz, Curtis Kyles, Barry Curlee and David Hagaman with a 61.
Third Flight winners were Mary Seaford, Gene Seaford, Robin Leslie and Gilbert Sprinkle with a 67.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Brian Nix. Closest on No. 5 was David Godwin, who made a hole-in-one and will receive a special golf package from Nissan.
Closest to the pin on No. 13 was Honeycutt. Closest on No. 16 was Wheet.

The McCanless Couples played a Captains Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was David & Azalee Huneycutt and Harry Owen. Taking second was the team of Ralph & Pam Craver and Walt Kincaid. Closest to the pin and Longest putt were won by Kincaid.
