Area Sports: Tapia scores 4 goals for South; Salisbury wins in soccer, tennis

Eber Tapia scored four goals to lead South Rowan to a 6-0 Central Carolina Conference soccer win over Lexington on Monday.

Kevin Silva and Jeremy Beatley also scored for the Raiders (7-5, 3-4). Parker Anderson and Noah Steedley combined for 21 saves and the shutout.

West Rowan battled to a 2-all tie with Cox Mill on Monday.

Luis Vasquez and Joseph Turcios scored goals for the Falcons.  Salvador Bautista had an assist.

West’s Chris Mercado made 14 saves.

Salisbury won at home on Monday, beating East Davidson 3-0 in a CCC match.

The Hornets (6-4, 4-3)   got two early goals from Christopher Portillo on assists from Joshua Portillo and Gabriel Fuentes Reyes to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

Christopher Portillo got an assist himself 22 seconds into the second half as sophomore Will Webb finished a cross to conclude the scoring.

Wade Robins made four saves for the Hornets.

Salisbury got excellent play from Hugo Trujillo, Juan Garcia Cortez  and Bennett Clark.

Salisbury is at North Davidson at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

HS girls tennis

Salisbury stayed undefeated on Monday with a 9-0 win against East Davidson in Central Carolina Conference action.

The Hornets (9-0, 7-0) got singles wins from Lillie Rusher, Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Abby Campion, Sophie Chmiel and Kate Burton.

Rusher/Thurman, Burton/Burton and Campion/Chmiel were winning doubles teams.

Salisbury has a home match today against Ledford at 4:30 p.m.

HS girls golf

In Central Carolina Conference girls golf on Monday a Lexington Golf Club,  Oak Grove won with a score of 124.

West Davidson’s Ainslee Conrad was medalist with a 36. Phoebe Shields shot 50 to lead Salisbury.

HS cross country

The Rowan County Championships are set for  Thursday at Dan Nicholas  Park. The boys varsity race is at 5:15 p.m., with the girls varsity race at 5:45 p.m.

The jayvee race is at 6:20 p.m. Awards ceremony is at 6:50 p.m.

NFL

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) made five tackles for Pittsburgh in Sunday’s loss to San Francisco.

Epps to be honored

The West Rowan Middle School football field will be dedicated to Erich Epps during halftime ceremonies on Thursday.

Epps coached the Bulldogs for 31 years.

Fall baseball

East Rowan Jake Hunter and JD Basinger had outstanding pitching outings for the South Charlotte Panthers over the weekend.

Local golf

In McCanless Couples golf on Sunday the first-place team was  Calvin Smith, Walt Kincaid and Mary & Gene Seaford.

Second place went to the team of Don Carpenter, Harry Owen and Pam & Ralph Carver.
