Area Sports: East soccer, West tennis win

East Rowan’s boys soccer team outscored Davie 6-4 on Tuesday.

East (1-1) got goals from Jesus Ordonez, Drew Roane, Luis Funez, Jaxon Mastranunzio, Reuben Leslie and Andrew Martin.

  West Rowan lost 6-1 to Mooresville on Tuesday.

Salvador Bautista scored the goal. Johnny Alvarez had an assist. Chris Mercado made 18 saves in goal.

HS girls tennis

West Rowan’s tennis team won against Davie 8-1 on Tuesday.

West (2-0) opened with a 9-0 win against A.L. Brown.

Lacy Waggoner, Madison Smith, Mira White, Skylar Jahnke, Gracie Wise and Kelsie Crider won in singles against the Wonders, while Elizabeth Bogle/Ashley Pender, Noelle Sparks/Gavin Staton and Reagan Haggas/Taylor Poole won in doubles.

Varsity volleyball

South Rowan’s volleyball team won against Central Carolina Conference opponent North Davidson on Tuesday 25-15, 25-9 and 25-10.

Anna Rymer had 14 kills and 12 assists. Kira Rymer had 12 kills and 16 assists. Kendall Walter had seven aces. Cameron Black had 11 digs, and Payton Black had 10 digs for the Raiders (4-1, 3-0).

Carson stayed undefeated with a  25-13 25-21 and 25-19 win against Robinson on Tuesday.

North Rowan lost to Uwharrie Charter 25-18, 25-16 and 25-23 on Tuesday in Yadkin Valley Conference action.

Chloee Stoner served for eight points. Ti’Ashia Harrison served for seven points. Roziah Ellis had three blocks.

In East Rowan’s 3-2 loss to Robinson on Monday, Mikayla Tucker had 11 kills, while Leah Hinceman had eight. Riley Hill had 10 digs and 22 serve-receives. Reaghan Moore had 17 assists.

Jayvee volleyball

South Rowan’s jayvee team won 31-29 and 25-14 against North Davidson on Tuesday.

Tamaria Rhyne had five kills. Ava Huffman had four kills. McKinley Faw had seven digs. Kali Nelson had six digs. Emma Owens had 10 assists.

Local golf

Fifty-five GARs members played at Warrior.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gordon Correll with a 60.80.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Allen Hammill with a net of 60.22.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Clive Mahaffey with a net of 61.28.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Jim Brown with a net of 58.61.

Correll had low gross score with a 72, while Jim Brown had low net score.

Donald Martin, 75, shot a 74. Frank Masingo, 83, shot an 80. Clive Mahaffey, 84,  shot an 82. Bill Saunders, 85, shot an 83.  J.C. Ritchie, 94, shot an 85.

Chuck Jones eagled the par-4 No. 18 hole.

In a rain-shortened Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association low net event, Carolyn Ries had first low net, Susan Wydner had second low net, and Mary Seaford had third low net.

Catawba football

Season-ticket pick-up for Catawba football is today at the Shuford Stadium President’s Box.

Associate athletic director Jeff Childress said that ticket packets can be picked up between 5:30 and 8 p.m.

Camp for youth

Salisbury mayor Al Heggins will host area youth at a free baseball and softball camp as part of the United States Conference of Mayors support of MLB’s   “PLAY BALL SUMMER” initiative.

The program focuses on the fun nature of baseball or softball and encourages an active and healthy lifestyle for children in all communities.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon at Catawba College’s Newman Park (baseball field) there will be a baseball camp for Salisbury boys and girls, ages 7 to 15. The camp will be led by Catawba baseball and softball teams, who will teach the fundamentals of each sport.
