Area Sports: Lyerly shoots 70 in US Amateur

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot even-par 70 in the second round of the U.S. Amateur in Pinehurst on Tuesday.
Lyerly, who shot 75 on Monday, has a chance to make the top 64 and advance to match play. That will be determined today. Play was suspended on Tuesday with some golfers still on the course.

Sixty GARS members played at Rolling Hills.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 63.08.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Joe Sheppard with a net of 59.37.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Gene Cauble with a net of 57.05
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Luther with a net of 63.32
Low gross score was a 70 by Bernard Caldwell and Gene Cauble had low net score.
Sheppard eagled the par 4 13 hole.
Eight members shot their age or better: Bernard Caldwell, 71, shot a 70; Donald Martin, 75, shot a 72; Gene Cauble, 80, shot a 75; Ed Lockhart, 81, shot an 80; Frank Masingo, 83, shot a 79; Bill Saunders, 85, shot an 85; Bert Bollinger, 90, shot a 90; and J.C. Ritchie, 94, shot an 82.

Sarah Hilton, Salem Ward, Korina Lookabill and Julie Gadd had two hits each, but Davidson County lost to Cumberland 11-4 in the state tournament on Tuesday in Shelby.
Davidson, which won twice on Monday, is still alive in the double-elimination event and plays in a 10 a.m. elimination game on Wednesday.
Legion baseball
The World Series in Shelby starts Thursday.
Randolph County plays Massachusetts at 7 p.m. in the final game of the day.
High school football
The Rowan County Jamboree will be held at North Rowan on Friday, Aug. 16.
North Rowan’s football team is the host for the second annual Rowan County Jamboree on Friday.
All six Rowan county teams will be in action, along with West Iredell and West Stanly.
Teams aren’t matched up with teams they’re scheduled to play in the regular season.
The cost is $6.

Chiefs Club
The Catawba College Chiefs Club has announced that “packet pick-up day,” for season-ticket holders of the upcoming football season, is Wednesday, Aug. 28, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Jeff Childress, associate athletic director for athletic development at Catawba, said the packets can be picked up in the President’s Box of Shuford Stadium.

Intimidators
KANNAPOLIS — Alex Manasa allowed just three hits over six innings, leading the Greensboro Grasshoppers over the Kannapolis Intimidators in a 2-0 win on Tuesday.
Manasa (9-3) picked up the win after he struck out eight.
Both runs for Greensboro came in the first inning when Luke Mangieri hit an RBI single and Ji-Hwan Bae stole home.
Sam Long (6-5) went five innings, allowing two runs and five hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out five and walked two.
The Intimidators were held off the scoreboard for the sixth time this season, while the Grasshoppers’ staff recorded their 11th shutout of the year.
Greensboro improved to 9-4 against Kannapolis this season.
