Little League softball: Rowan 12U wins 1-0 vs. Florida

Staff report

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Rowan Little League’s 12U softball all-stars prevailed again in the Southeast Regional on Friday.

For the second straight day, Rowan held on to win 1-0. Again, Rowan scored its only run in the first inning and pitcher Campbell Schaen maintained the lead.

Schaen struck out eight and pitched a two-hitter as Rowan beat a team from Windermere, Florida.  Schaen didn’t walk a batter, but she hit two.

Schaen, a rising eighth-grader at Mooresville Middle School, pitched a no-hitter on Thursday in a victory against the Virginia champs.

Schaen singled with one out in the top of the first inning. Arabelle Shulenberger ran for Schaen and was able to score from second base on an infield hit by Avrelle Harrell.

Rowan (8-0) was held to three hits by Florida pitcher Lexi King. Harrell was credited with two of Rowan’s hits.

Aly Henry had both hits for Florida.

Rowan is off now until Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when it plays Tennessee’s Daniel Boone Little League. Those are the two unbeaten teams in the seven-team tournament.

In the other games on Friday, Tennessee beat West Virginia 3-2 and Virginia outscored Georgia 11-7. Georgia was the first team to be eliminated in the tournament’s modified double elimination format.

In Saturday’s elimination games, South Carolina plays Florida at 3 p.m. and Virginia takes on West Virginia at 6.
