CHAPEL HILL — Two local golfers continued play in the 105th Carolinas Amateur Championship on Saturday, one bouncing back and one falling back a little.

Davis Richards, of China Grove, a former star at South Rowan High School and currently on the N.C. State golf team, shot an even-par 72 on the Governors Club course, moving from 51st place into a tie for 38th.

Richards shot a 73 during Thursday’s first round, but carded a 5-over par 77 on Friday, barely making the cut of the top 61 golfers in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Salisbury’s Michael Childress, who had moved up to 11th place during Friday’s second round with a 1-over 73, battled to a 2-over 74 on Saturday and is tied for 20th, heading into Sunday’s final round.

Childress, a Cannon School graduate and a rising sophomore on the University of Richmond golf squad, shot a 1-under par 71 during Thursday’s first round. He stands at 218 for the first three rounds, 12 shots behind the leader, but just four strokes out of the top 10.

There is a three-way deadlock at the top at 10-under par 206. Jamie Wilson, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Jack Parrott of Columbia, S.C., and Joshua Martin, of Pinehurst, have a share of the lead.

Wilson fired the best round of the tournament (8-under 64) on Saturday, jumping to the top of the leaderboard. Davis Womble, of Winston-Salem, carded a 65 to move to 208 for the event, good enough for fourth place.

Luke Hackworth, of Charlotte, rounds out the top five at 209. He shot a 70 on Saturday, his third straight under par round. Hackworth and co-leader Martin are the only two golfers with three rounds in red numbers.

Childress struggled to a 39 on the front nine during Saturday’s play, but he rebounded with three birdies on the back nine for a 35. He birdied No. 13 and No. 17, both par-fives, and the par-3 12th hole.

Richards collected five birdies during the third round, but a double bogey on the par-4 16th hole kept him from breaking par for the day.

Ben Woodruff, of Huntersville, continued his roller-coaster ride on Saturday. He was the first-round leader at 66, struggled to a 78 on Friday, but fired a 1-under par 71 on Saturday, moving back into the top 10.
