Legion baseball update: Kannapolis and Mocksville on road Monday

Nick Ward’s walk-off single in the ninth inning lifted Mocksville to a wild 16-15 victory against Stokes County on Sunday night at Rich Park.

Mocksville led 9-0 after three innings, but Stokes County scored nine runs in the fourth.

Stokes led 11-9 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Mocksville scored twice and forced extra innings.

Both teams scored one run in the eighth.

Stokes got three in the top of the ninth, but Mocksville scored four in the bottom half.

Stokes had 17 hits. Mocksville had 21.

Ward blasted two homers for Mocksville, while Patrick Usher hit one. Joey Szvetitz had five hits. Troy Clary had three hits and three RBIs.

Caleb Smith had two homers and five RBIs for Stokes. Colby Guy had a homer and four RBIs.

The series is 1-1. The teams play a decisive game in King on Monday night.

Monday’s survivor starts a best-of-five series at Concord on Tuesday.

The Kannapolis-High Point series is still 1-1, as the teams were washed out on Sunday at Finch Field.

They’ll try to play Monday with first pitch at Finch Field set for 6 p.m.

Eastern Randolph beat Mooresville 12-1 on Sunday to take that first-round series 2-1.

Eastern Randolph, which finished last in the Northern Division, will play Game 1 of a best-of-five series on Tuesday at High Point or Kannapolis.

The other two Area III second-round series are set.

Stanly County will play at Randolph County on Tuesday.
