Area Sports: Morris rehabbing injury

Published 11:02 pm Monday, June 10, 2019

From staff and wire reports

Romar Morris (Salisbury, UNC) was released by the  Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders in May, but he is likely to be back on the active roster at some point in the 2019 season.

Morris, who had 813 return yards, 376 rushing yards, 167 receiving yards and seven TDs as a rookie in 2018, suffered an injury during the divisional championship game and missed Calgary’s Grey Cup victory against Ottawa.

Morris wasn’t able to pass a recent physical, but he’ll be doing his rehab with Stampeders.

He can’t practice or take part in drills or meetings, but head coach Dave Dickenson is optimistic that once he’s healthy Morris will again be a key member of the team.

Calgary lost Friday’s preseason game against British Columbia, 38-36.

College baseball

Ike Freeman (East Rowan) finished his junior season at UNC in Monday’s Super Regional loss.

He batted .293 with six homers and 52 RBIs. He walked 61 times, which boosted his on-base percentage to .436. He scored 45 runs for the Tar Heels.

The infielder, a shortstop last season, but mostly a third baseman in 2019, may have played his last game for UNC. He recently was a 14th-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians.

Freeman has the option of returning to UNC for his senior season, but he may choose to sign with the Indians and begin his pro career.

Cleveland has a rookie team in Arizona. The next step up the ladder for Cleveland prospects is Mahoning Valley (Ohio).

Austin Love (West Rowan)  finished his  redshirt freshman season  at UNC with an 8-4 record. His eight wins led the team and he also saved five games.

He had a 3.18 ERA and held opponents to a .216 batting average.

The 6-foot-3, 232-pound Love struck out 67 batters in 67 1/3 innings. He walked 25.

While Love will be only a sophomore next season, he will be eligible for the 2020 draft as a third-year college player.
