Area Sports: Lyerly advances in U.S. Open qualifying

In U.S. Open local qualifying held at  Duke University Golf Club on Wednesday, Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 3-under 69 and tied for second place.

Lyerly was one of five golfers to advance to sectional qualifying. Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, East Carolina) was his caddie.

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr (Cannon School) shot 5-over 77.

Salisbury native Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot 81.

Lyerly and his UNC Greensboro teammates will play in the  NCAA regional at Stanford on May 13-15. The top five teams at Stanford and five other regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship on May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Ark.

High school baseball

East Rowan will play at Cox Mill at 7 p.m. tonight in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

Senior second baseman Logan Stoner had a fine season for North Rowan (7-13). He was 23-for-51 for a .451 batting average.

High school softball

West Rowan junior pitcher Whitley Arnott surpassed 500 career strikeouts in Tuesday’s playoff win against Sun Valley.

Arnott has 204 strikeouts this season in 125 2/3  innings.

College baseball

  The Newberry, Catawba, Lincoln Memorial and Wingate baseball teams held strong in the  Southeast Region baseball poll released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

The Wolves earned the No. 2 spot in the poll, followed by the Indians at No. 3.

The Railsplitters are ranked No. 6 and the Bulldogs earned the No. 7 spot.   

Newberry is currently 41-14 overall, while Catawba is 41-12. Lincoln Memorial has a record of 33-17 and Wingate is 33-18 overall.

Catawba earned the SAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship by winning the  SAC  tournament championship.

  The rankings are the official poll used by the NCAA in the championship selection process and will continue to be released each week by the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee up to the NCAA Championship selections.

Mid. school soccer

Erwin’s girls won against Knox 4-0.

Tatum James led the Eagles with 3 goals. Lindsey Cook added a goal and three assists. Bethany Brady recorded the shutout in goal, saving her first PK and tallying four saves.

Erwin’s boys won 4-1 against Knox.

Ivan Landaverde led the Eagles with two goals, and Carter Honeycutt and Gabe Honeycutt had one each.

Alex Luna and Cole Eagle had assists.  Gavin Gullett recorded the win in goal with 10 saves.

West Rowan’s boys lost to China Grove 3-0.

Defensive standouts for the Bulldogs were Juan Calleja and Blake Pope.

Franco Reyes and Mason Quarles played well on offense.

West’s girls (9-4) beat China Grove 8-0.

  Anna Mead scored four goals and had two assists.

Brittany Vanhoose had three goals.  Lesli Guerrero had a goal and an assist.

Jisel Suarez had three assists. Kim Sanchez and Evelyn Kwitowski also had assists.
