Kannapolis man, dogs killed in early morning hit, run; local woman charged

Lisa Michelle Jones

KANNAPOLIS — A man and his two dogs were killed Monday morning in a hit-and-run accident.

The traffic crash occurred at 1:41 a.m. near the intersection of Bethpage Road and Leonard Avenue. When police officers arrived on the scene, they found Santiago Esteban and his two dogs dead.

Authorities said evidence indicated Esteban was walking his dogs when they were struck by a vehicle. A witness reported seeing a red sedan leaving the scene.

Jones was charged with felony hit-and-run, misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving left of center.

Jones remains in the Cabarrus County Detention Center under a $750,000 secured bond.

Police are continuing the investigation. No further details were released.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrest.
