Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball and softball sweep

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Catawba’s baseball team outscored Coker 11-7 and 8-5 to sweep a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Jacob Nester homered and drove in three runs in the first game. Hunter Shepherd had two doubles. Sawyer Strickland (4-1) pitched five innings for the win.

• In the second game, Jackson Raper went 4-for-4, with two doubles. Henderson Lentz drove in three runs with two hits.

Shepherd (5-2) pitched into the sixth inning and struck out eight. Peyton Williams notched his seventh save.

Catawba (27-7, 12-3) is tied for second in the SAC.

Catawba softball

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Madison Hunter (7-3) was the winning pitcher in both games of Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference doubleheader as Catawba beat Carson-Newman 6-3 and 8-7.

Kaylee Cook, Sierra McCarthy and Sydney Goertzen had triples for the Indians in the opener.

• In the second game, Cook had three hits. Goertzen had three RBIs. Taylor Martin and Summer Howerton had two RBIs apiece.

Catawba (16-11, 4-2) is tied for second in the SAC and plays at Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday.

South baseball

LANDIS — South Rowan won a non-conference game against A.L. Brown on Saturday, 9-1.

The Raiders (4-6) got a three-run double from Eli Hiskey and a two-run single from Nathan Chrismon to pull away from the Wonders (3-7).

Hiskey (1-1) pitched four innings for the win and had  relief help from Andrew Furr and  Bryson Bebber

South was coming off a big CCC win against Oak Grove on Friday, while A.L. Brown lost to Central Cabarrus. A roundup of  Friday’s games is online.

Carson baseball

CHINA GROVE — Carson won its ninth straight game on Saturday, routing Cox Mill, 11-1 in five innings, in non-conference action.

Aaron Misenheimer (3-0) earned the win. He allowed only two hits.

Luke Barringer went 3-for-3 with four runs scored for the Cougars (9-1). He had two doubles.

CP Pyle tripled. Logan Rogers and Zeb Burns had two hits and two RBIs apiece.

West softball

MOUNT ULLA — KK Dowling smashed two homers, drove in six runs and made a spectacular catch in the outfield to lead West Rowan to a 12-2 win against Grove City (Ohio) on Saturday.

Winning pitcher Whitley Arnott struck out five and  helped herself with two RBIs.

Mary Sobataka had two hits and two RBIs. Allison Ennis scored two runs for the Falcons (7-1).

Carson softball

CHINA GROVE — Liza Simmerson had four hits and five RBIs to lead Carson to a 13-6 non-conference win against Cox Mill on Saturday.

Carson had 17 hits.

Winning pitcher Madison Anderson homered and drove in three runs for the Cougars (6-3).  Katie Jewell also homered and knocked in three.

Kaitlyn Honeycutt had two hits and scored three runs. Tate Barger and Ellie Wilhelm had two hits each.

The Chargers had 12 hits, with Jordan Parkin and Kayla Smith getting three apiece.
