Area Sports Briefs: A.L. Brown edges Trojans to reach third round

KANNAPOLIS — It’s tough to beat a good team three times, but A.L. Brown held off Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday, 62-60, to win a 3A second-round game at Bullock Gym.

Amari Grier scored 19 to lead the Wonders (21-7). Amare Haynie had 17, while Kheni Briggs had 13.

Fourth-seeded Davie County survived at home against Hopewell, 63-61, in a second-round 4A boys game.

Bryson Childress scored 35 points as North Stanly’s boys won at Starmount on Thursday, 64-63, in overtime, in a 1A second-round matchup.

Gray Stone knocked off Albemarle in a 1A second-round girls game, 59-43.

Statesville beat Erwin, the No. 1 seed in the 3A West girls bracket, taking a 61-58 win in Asheville.

North Iredell was eliminated by Asheboro, 49-47 in a 3A girls game on Thursday. Asheboro’s Tanaesha Ellison stole the ball with seconds left and fed Diamond McDowell, who made the winning shot at the buzzer.

UNC recruit Nia Daniels scored a career-high 32 points for Hickory Ridge in a 73-50 win at McDowell in the 4A West girls bracket.

Catawba signee Lyrik Thorne scored 27 points as Ledford won against Croatan, 41-29, in the 2A East  girls bracket on Thursday.

Themus Fulks scored 44  points to lead North Davidson’s boys to a 62-57 win against Patton in a 2A second-round game on Thursday.

Central Cabarrus lost to Charlotte Catholic, 44-40, in a 3A girls game on Thursday.  Ja’el Miller led the Vikings with 15 points.

Dane Bertolina scored 17 for Charlotte Catholic, while Clara Flatau  had 15.

Mid. school girls

Erwin’s girls won against West Rowan, 36-12.

Erwin was led by Allie Martin with 14 points and Daisy Berry with 13.

       

College basketball

Senior Day for Catawba is Saturday afternoon. Anderson provides the opposition, with games scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

HS boys tennis

The North Rowan boys tennis team lost to South Stanly 5-4 in a Yadkin Valley Conference matchup on Thursday.

Winning in singles for North were Hans Roemer, J.D. Hager and Arizona Day.

Winning in doubles was the team of Day/Terrance Settlemeyer.

HS football

Former Carson defensive tackle Joshua Malloy signed with Chowan.

Malloy played as a senior at Eastside High in Taylors, S.C., near Greenville.

Minor leagues

Former Carson hurler Owen White is ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the Texas Rangers farm system.

Women’s lacrosse

GAFFNEY, S.C. — Limestone shut down Catawba over the final 26 minutes and came away with a 15-9 victory in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.

The Catawba Indians dropped to 1-2.

Britannie Ouimet answered Kenna-Shadrick’s goal in less that a minute to regain the lead for the Saints. Ouimet added another with 15:07 to go to make it 12-9. Limestone padded the lead with a pair of goals in the final five minutes.

Limestone out-shot Catawba 33-14, but Aryn Dorr recorded 13 saves. The Lady Indians would also win half of the 26 draw controls, six by Kenna-Shadrick and five by Nicole Hunt.

After an early 2-1 Catawba lead, the Saints sc
