SALISBURY – Celebrate Black History Month with Rowan Public Library and learn about “Heroes of the Underground Railroad.” Bright Star Touring Theatre will perform this show at the headquarters library, 201 W. Fisher St.
The play will be performed in Stanback Auditorium on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21. Both performances, which run about an hour long, begin at 6:30 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free.
“Heroes” explores the lives and work of notable figures from America’s Underground Railroad. The show provides a fundamental historical context of the time period while re-creating the lives and work of several heroes. Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, Henry “Box” Brown, John Parker and Frederick Douglass are just some of the figures brought to life.
“RPL has hosted several Bright Star productions over the years, and they are consistently thoughtful, high-quality performances,” said Melissa Oleen, deputy director of the library.
In addition to sharing the stories of Underground Railroad figures, the play will reference the secret messages shared along routes and music from the period. “Heroes” seeks to inspire young audiences with the stories of everyday Americans who stood up for their beliefs and worked to make the world a better place.
Oleen expects “Heroes” to be an engaging experience. “Bright Star’s attention to detail is impressive, and they have a flair for storytelling that makes their plays a success with audiences of all ages,” she said.
“Heroes” is recommended for ages 8 and older, though all ages are welcome. The free performance is sponsored by the Friends of Rowan Public Library.
“RPL is very lucky to have a Friends group that supports educational programs, and I am excited that the library is able to provide this play to its community,” said Oleen.
