Area Sports Briefs: Wilson scores 25 in West victory

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s girls basketball team cruised to an easy 69-16 non-conference win against Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

The Falcons shut out the visitors in the second quarter and led at halftime, 46-7.

Abigail Wilson scored 25 points for West (17-4). The junior was  honored for achieving 1,000 career rebounds. She’s also scored over 1,400 points.

Mary Sobataka made four 3-pointers and scored 17 for the Falcons.

Kia Pharr had eight points, while Taylor Poole scored seven.

Mount Pleasant fell to 5-17.

West boys

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s boys led for most of  Wednesday’s non-conference basketball game, but couldn’t hold off Mount Pleasant.

The Tigers (18-4) pulled out a 76-69 victory over the Falcons (3-18).

West led by 11 after a quarter and was up 42-34 at halftime.

Payne Stolsworth made three 3-pointers and scored 22 for West. Bryson Moss scored 14. Zack Brawley got the Falcons off to a good start, getting nine of his 13 in the first quarter.

The story for the Tigers was junior point guard Keim Moore, who scored 33 points. Moore had 26 in the second half and 17 in the fourth quarter. The Tigers outscored West 25-14 in the fourth quarter.

Hunter Sloop scored 16 for the Tigers, while Ryan Bonnett had 11.

Catawba softball

SALISBURY — Catawba was swept in Wednesday’s softball doubleheader at Whitley Field by Limestone.

Limestone  (4-0) rallied to win the opener, 6-5, and took the nightcap, 2-0.

The highlight for the Indians (2-2) was a grand slam by Jordan Dean  in the bottom of the first in the opener.

Errors hurt Catawba as  Limestone came back, and the Saints won in the extra frame.

Dean had two of Catawba’s six hits. Preston Ellenberg and Madison Hunter (0-1) split  pitching duties.  Hunter fanned five and Ellenberg four.

Limestone hurlers Caroline Ruth and Sydney Sullivan shut down Catawba in the second game.

Sydney Goertzen beat out an infield grounder in the sixth to break up a no-hit bit. Kayla Pedersen had a hit in the seventh. Brooke Walser (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs, five hits and no walks.

Catawba returns to action at home this weekend, hosting UNC Pembroke on Saturday and Virginia State on Sunday.

HS football

Three A.L. Brown players signed on Wednesday morning.

Quarterback Jordan Medley (6-3, 200) signed with Kansas.

Linebacker Justin Holsclaw (6-1, 200) signed with Charleston Southern. Defensive end/linebacker Darion Lott (6-2, 240) signed with Barton.
