SALISBURY — Authorities say a single-vehicle collision Sunday evening left one person dead and another injured.

The accident occurred about 7:45 p.m. when a 2004 Chevrolet driven by Jesus Ernesto Garcia struck a tree on West Jake Alexander Boulevard near Castlewood Drive.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle swerved erratically to the left, crossing both lanes of traffic before spinning out of control and striking a tree in the passenger door area.

Nelson Fuentes, the lone passenger in Garcia’s vehicle, was killed.

According to the police report, Garcia said he had consumed two beers and smelled of alcohol. He was transported to Northeast Hospital and treated for his injuries.

He has since been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, with additional charges to follow after the results of a blood alcohol content test.
