High school volleyball: First-round playoff games

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan rolled to a sweep on Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Eighth-seeded West rolled against No. 23  Tuscola —  25-9, 25-13 and 25-13.

Tori Hester had 15 kills and 18 digs. KK Dowling had 11 kills and four aces.  Ava Link had 10 digs and five aces. Kelcie Love had three aces. Hannah Pratt had 14 digs. Allison Ennis had 20 assists. Carly Stiller and Emma Gusler had three kills each.

West (18-4) hosts No. 9 A.C. Reynolds (22-3) at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

CHINA GROVE — Mallory Weast had 20 kills as Carson swept Piedmont in a first-round 3A matchup on Tuesday.

The third-seeded Cougars (24-3) won 25-7, 25-17 and 25-16.

Nancy Gamewell had five kills. Grace Thomas had 25 assists. Katie Blackwell had three aces and 16 digs. Kary Hales had 18 serve-receives and 19 digs.

Jaden Vaughn had 12 kills, nine digs and zero hitting errors.

Piedmont, seeded 30th, finished 8-16.

Carson hosts No. 14 Southwest Guilford (20-6) on Thursday at 6 p.m.

East Rowan, seeded 32nd, lost at No. 1 seed Marvin Ridge 25-9, 25-4 and 25-6 in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Tuesday.

East finished 5-17.

No. 16 South Iredell won against No. 17 North Iredell  25-22, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-19 in the first round of the 3A volleyball playoffs.

South Iredell goes to Marvin Ridge in the second round.

Charlotte Catholic, seeded 10th, swept No. 23 Statesville in a 3A first-round matchup.

In 2A matchups, No. 4 West Davidson swept No. 29 North Davidson, while No. 17 Ledford went on the road and swept No. 16 East Gaston.

East Davidson lost, 3-1, to Wheatmore.
