Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Little League softball 2-0 in SE Regional

Rowan County Little League won again in the Southeast Regional tournament in Warner Robins, Ga., on Friday, but was challenged by West Virginia.

Rowan’s 11-12 team won, 2-0, with Campbell Schaen and Karsen Simpson combining on the shutout, with five strikeouts.

Rowan was held to four hits, with Schaen getting two. Brooke Piper and Cailynn Winford had the other hits.

Rowan scored two runs in the third inning with some aggressive baserunning and with the help of two errors.

Rowan and Tennessee’s Daniel Boone Little League are still undefeated. They’re scheduled to square off at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Two elimination games are scheduled for today. South Carolina was the first team to be eliminated on Friday with a lopsided loss to Virginia.

The regional winner goes to Portland, Oregon, for the World Series on Aug. 8-15.

Legion softball

Concord won its second straight American Legion state championship on Friday with two wins in Morganton.

Concord (20-2) beat Eastern Randolph, 6-3, in a semifinal.

Madison Michael came through with a strong relief outing after Concord fell behind 3-0, and Lindsey Powell hit a big, three-run homer.

Kyrah Phelix had three hits, and Phoebe Florian, Riley Tucker and Malaya Black collected two each.

Concord beat Hickory, 9-4, in the final.

Phelix drove in two runs. Tucker had a triple and scored twice. Malaya Black and Malia Black had two hits each.

Powell was the winning pitcher, with Michael relieving in the fifth when Concord’s lead was down to 5-3 and earning a save.

Legion baseball

In a Stars pool game at UNC Greensboro, Garner Nationals got four hits from Tucker Rogers and beat Post 87 High Point, 7-5, in the state tournament on Friday.

Both teams are 1-1.

Shelby piled up runs late and rallied to beat Wilmington, 11-5, at UNC Greensboro on Friday in a Stars Pool game.

Wilmington led after four innings, 5-2.

Logan McNeely tripled  and drove in two runs, and Colby Ferguson doubled and drove in three for  Shelby Post 82.

Colby Emmertz had three hits and three RBIs for Wilmington Post 10.

Both teams are 1-1 in pool play.

Whiteville stayed alive with a 6-4 Stripes Pool win over Caldwell County in eight innings at Finch Field.

Whiteville (1-1) can advance to the semifinals with a win against Rowan County today at UNC Greensboro, but Caldwell County (0-2) has no chance to advance.

Jackson Brown had two hits and two RBIs for Caldwell Post 29.

Owen McDowell had a two-run single in the top of the eighth for Whiteville Post 137.

Local golf

The Country Club of Salisbury hosted the 3rd annual Challenge Cup.

Teams of six women represented the Country Club of Salisbury Women’s Golf Association,  Corbin Hills WGA and McCanless WGA.

The McCanless women won this year’s Cup.
