Area Sports Briefs: Adams falls just short of cutline; Intimidators fall despite big night by Madrigal

After being unable to finish Round 2 of the PGA Barbasol Championship in Kentucky on Friday because of weather,  Salisbury’s Frank Adams III came out and birdied the 18th hole on Saturday morning. He finished 3-under for two solid rounds, but the cutline fell at 4-under.

Horace Billings Rowan Amateur qualifying continued at Corbin Hills Saturday, with more golfers scheduled to play today.

Entries are being accepted now for the 11th annual Rowan Junior Open that will be held on Aug. 20-21 at the  Club at Irish Creek and Warrior.

Entry fee is $85.

Intimidators

HICKORY — Miguel Aparicio hit a run-scoring triple in the third inning, leading the Hickory Crawdads to a 7-4 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday.

Kannapolis had runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, but Tate Blackman flew out to end the game.

The triple by Aparicio started the scoring in a four-run inning and gave the Crawdads a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Ryan Dorow hit an RBI single and then scored on a two-run home run by Pedro Gonzalez.

The Crawdads tacked on another run in the eighth when Yonny Hernandez hit an RBI single, driving in Samuel Huff.

Tyree Thompson (6-7) got the win with four innings of scoreless, three-hit relief while Kannapolis starter Spencer Moran (0-1) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

First-round draft pick Nick Madrigal doubled and singled twice, scoring two runs for the Intimidators.

Junior Legion

Mocksville was rained out on Saturday and plays today against Dare County at 10:30 a.m.

Randolph exited the tournament with its second loss on Saturday, falling to Hampstead and Windsor.

Little League softball

The Southeast Regional Junior League (13-14) and Senior League (15-16) tournaments conclude today at Salisbury Community Park.

Undefeated Florida teams are in the driver’s seat in both age groups.

Rowan Little League gets started on in the 11-12 Southeast Regional on Thursday in Warner Robins, Ga.

Rowan takes on Darlington S.C. Little League at 5 p.m.
