Joseph Robinson on ‘Bookwatch’

Joseph Robinson talks about “Long Winded: An Oboist’s Incredible Journey to the New York Philharmonic” on “North Carolina Bookwatch” today at 11 a.m. and Thursday, June 28 at 5 p.m.

The memoir explains how a small town-boy persuaded conductor Zubin Mehta, to give him a chance at one of the world’s most coveted positions in one of the world’s greatest orchestras.

Thanks to the financial generosity and leadership of furniture heir James Harper, the local high school had the best band in the state. When Harper drafted Robinson to fill an empty oboe slot, provided the resources, and set high standards for performance, the course was set.

Without the focused, intensive conservatory training, his effort to build a life around his passion for the oboe was a struggle. How he won the first oboe position at the Philharmonic is a story that entertains and inspires.
