Area Sports Briefs: White leads four Rowan players on Coaches All-State team

Carson pitcher/shortstop Owen White was named 3A state player of the year by the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

White had previously been named Gatorade State Player of the Year, North Piedmont Conference Player of the year, Rowan County Pitcher of the Year and Rowan County’s co-player of the year.

White also will be the county’s male athlete of the year for the 2017-18 school year.

Carson’s Maddux Holshouser and East Rowan’s  Hayden Setzer and Wayne Mize were named 3A All-State players on Tuesday.

Ledford’s Logan Whitaker is the 2A state player of the year.

Robinson’s Jason White made 3A All-State and Mount Pleasant’s Hayden Radford made 2A All-State.

NC Jr. Boys Open

CHARLOTTE —  Alex Goff of Kings Mountain  earned the No. 1 seed for match play at the 51st North Carolina Junior Boys Championship.

Goff carded a 7-under  64 with eight birdies in qualifying stroke play at Pine Island Country Club on Tuesday.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress shot 5-under 66 and tied for second. He’s seeded second for match play.

Salisbury’s Charlie Barr shot 67 and is seeded fourth for match play.

Match play competition starts today, with the first round in the morning and the second round this afternoon.

Round three and the quarterfinals of match play will take place on Thursday, with eemifinals and final matches will take place on Friday.

Legion baseball

Kannapolis stayed unbeaten in the Southern Division with a 7-5 win against Mocksville on Tuesday.

Jack Robinson won it. Jacob Tuttle saved it. Seth Morgan had two more hits.

Kannapolis hosts Rowan in a big one on Thursday.

Junior Legion

Carson (13-2) won against West Rowan, 11-3, on Tuesday.

Legion softball

Rowan County (3-2) lost two games at Concord, falling  2-1 and 9-5. Concord rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the nightcap.Concord is the defending state champ.

Davidson County split with Kannapolis on Tuesday.

Kannapolis won the first game on a squeeze bunt, 1-0, but Davidson County came back to win the second game, 9-6.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played in a Low Gross, Low Net event on Tuesday.

Low Gross in the First Flight was won by Susan Morris and Low Net went to Azalee Story.

In the Second Flight, Low Gross was won by Eileen Full and Low Net went to Bev Cobb.

Low Putts was won by Carolynn Ries.

SAL All-Star Game

GREENSBORO —  The Southern Division defeated the Northern Division in the   SAL League All-Star Game in Greensboro.

Asheville Tourists second baseman Bret Boswell had three hits, a home run, and three RBIs to lead the South to victory.
