African-American cultural center celebrates Black history

KANNAPOLIS — The African-American Museum and Cultural Center will celebrate Black history on June 23, on the theme of “African-American Businesses: Then & Now.”
The celebration will highlight collections, genealogical research and African-American entrepreneurship.

Speakers include Leslie Kesler (Cabarrus County Public Library), Lisa Brown (Independent historian/member of Shankle and Scott Family), and Stephen and Steve Shipp of Shipp’s Fire Extinguisher Sales & Service.

Memorial tributes will be made to KAA-MaCC’s 2016 Legacy Hall of Fame inductees: George C. Knox and Milton L. Taylor and KAA-MaCC inaugural board member Ruth M. Curry.
Children’s entertainment includes face painting, balloons and Black history activity books. There will be vendors on site and refreshments will be available at the reception following the program.

The program begins at 4 p.m. in the Enrichment Center of Bethel Baptist Church, 1209 Opal St., Kannapolis. The event is free and open to the public.
