Rowan weather: Bad air days through the weekend

Not only is it going to be a hot weekend, now it’s also going to be an Air Quality Action weekend.

Today through Sunday, Code Orange air quality due to ground level ozone is expected, with Code Yellow particle pollution.

Code Orange means the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children, active adults and those with heart or respiratory diseases. Limit outdoor activity, especially lawn mowing.

Today will be mostly sunny and very warm, with a high of 87. Winds will be from the northeast at 5-7 mph. Tonight will be partly cloudy and 68, with east wind around 5 mph calming in the evening.

Saturday starts with patchy fog, then it will be mostly sunny and 88, with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Light east wind. Saturday night also has a 20 percent chance of showers and storms, with a low of 70 and calm wind.

Father’s Day Sunday is going to be hot, with a high of 94 and mostly sunny skies. Move that celebration inside. The low will be 72.

Monday will be a scorcher, with a high of 98 and mostly sunny skies. The heat index will be above 100 degrees. Air quality could also be a problem. The low will be a warm and muggy 74.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny and 97. Tuesday night will have a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7 p.m. It will be partly cloudy and 74 again.

Wednesday’s high will be 96, with partly sunny skies and a 30 percent chance of showers and storms. The low will be 74 again, with the same 30 percent chance of pop-up storms.

Thursday will be partly sunny and 93, with a 30 percent chance of showers and storms.

It’s important to make sure the elderly, children and pets have a place to get out of the sun and access to plenty of cool water. Remember that heat builds inside vehicles to deadly levels.
