Area Sports Briefs: Sands still swinging

Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit his ninth homer of the season for the Richmond Flying Squirrels in Double A baseball on Thursday.

The two-run blast in the fourth inning helped Richmond beat Trenton, 6-3.

Sands has heated up lately and while he’s only batting .226, he has 29 RBIs in 164 at-bats.

HICKORY,  — Tyler Ratliff hit a walk-off single with one out in the 10th inning, as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 2-1 on Thursday.

Samuel Huff scored the game-winning run after he started the inning on second and advanced to third on an out.

The Intimidators tied the game 1-1 in the top of the eighth when Johan Cruz hit an RBI single, scoring Tyler Frost.

Hickory starter A.J. Alexy struck out seven and walked two over six scoreless innings. Joe Barlow (2-1) got the win with a scoreless inning in relief while Jose Nin (2-2) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Pedro Gonzalez homered and doubled in the win.

CFL

Romar Morris (Salisbury, UNC) got lots of opportunities for the Calgary Stampeders in a 36-23 preseason loss to British Columbia.

Morris had his best moments as a punt returner. He returned three for 68 yards and had a 40-yard return.

He had a kickoff return of 20 yards, caught two passes for 15 yards and rushed four times for 6 yards.

Calgary plays at Saskatchewan tonight.

Former Catawba QB Danny O’Brien is with the Edmonton Eskimos.

He completed 9 of 14 passes for 57 yards in a 33-13 preseason loss to Winnipeg.

Legion baseball

Darrell Smith homered and drove in two runs as Winston-Salem beat Kernersville, 5-1, in a Northern Division game on Thursday at Mount Tabor High.

Local golf

The Country Club of Salisbury will be one of the sites for  U.S. Junior Amateur local qualifying on Monday, June 11.

The championship will be held at Baltusrol Golf Club (Upper and Lower Courses) in Springfield, N.J., July 16-21.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is open to any male competitor who has not reached his 19th birthdy as of July 21 and whose Handicap Index does not exceed 4.4.

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNCG) shot 1-over 71 on Thursday in the Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, S.C.

Lyerly is at even par 140 after two rounds and is tied for 16th.

Junior Legion

Cole Hales and Logan Rogers swung big bats for Carson in Thursday’s 8-3 win against South Rowan.

Carson is scheduled to play at Salisbury tonight at 7 p.m.

West Rowan romped against Thomasville, 15-3, on Thursday.

Lady Legion softball

Rowan County will play home games at East Rowan High this year. Rowan’s first game is on Tuesday, June 12, a home game against Davidson County.
