Area Sports Briefs: Catawba teams fall in SAC tourneys

KODAK, Tenn. — Sophomore hurler Austin Todd tossed a  three-hitter to lead the eighth-seeded Anderson baseball to a  4-1 upset of top-seeded Catawba on the second day of the   South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship onFriday afternoon at Smokies Stadium.

Catawba didn’t get a hit until Joe Butts singled in the eighth.

The Indians loaded the bases in the ninth but could only get one run on Heath Mitchem’s groundball for a forceout. Luke Setzer’s flyball ended the game with two men on base.

Catawba wasted a great start by Michael Elwell, who shut out Anderson for seven innings before running into trouble in the eighth.

Catawba plays Wingate in an elimination game today at noon.

Catawba’s softball team lost to Coker, 7-0, in a first-round game in  the single-elimination SAC Tournament.

Allie Baker had two of Catawba’s four hits.

Catawba had the bases loaded in the top of the first inning but failed to score, and it went downhill quickly from there.

Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team (11-8) lost to Queens, 16-6, in a SAC tourney semifinal on Friday.

Prep softball

South Rowan clobbered Salisbury, 15-0, on Friday in Central Carolina Conference action.

Summer McKeon hit two homers for the Raiders.  Jalee Rollins and Ashlyn Plott also homered. Plott and McKeon had three hits.  Brooke Lowery had two hits, including a triple.  Whitley Arnott had two hits. Morgan Brown pitched a one-hitter, with Ellen Yang getting the hit for Salisbury.

East Rowan beat North Iredell, 2-0, in North Piedmont Conference action.

Mackenzie Sprinkle homered for the Mustangs. Victoria Lewis doubled, and  Kaitlyn Samples drove in a run. Karley Teague pitched the shutout.

Rylie Stewart and Tate Barger combined on a no-hitter as Carson beat South Iredell,  2-1, for a big NPC win on Friday.

Stewart and Haley Howerton drove in runs for the Cougars (13-6, 7-2). Kary Hales tripled. Katie Jewell had two doubles.

Prep soccer

  Salisbury improved to 19-0 overall and 16-0 in the Central Carolina Conference with a 6-0 victory over East Davidson.

Salisbury got goals from Julia Honeycutt (2), Freya Obermueller, Caroline Cardelle, Anna Grace Woollyand Piper Muire.

Assisting for the Hornets were  Woolly, Obermueller, Maria Capito, Ellen Simons, Lillie Rusher, and Lila Harry.

Emily Mann recorded the shutout in goal.

Salisbury got excellent play from the backline of Bethanie Stauffer, Rusher, Elle Kennedy  and Olivia Dagenhart. The victory clinched back-to-back conference titles for the Hornets.

Carson won against East Rowan, 9-0, in a North Piedmont Conference game on Friday.

East played without goalkeeper Lauren Weisensel. Lauren Trayah had six saves.

For Carson, Sarah Musselwhite and Lani Isley scored three goals each. Hannah Smith had two goals. Gracie Thomason had a goal and Lindsey Conrad had two assists.

1st place: Seth Worley (Lex) defeated Jander Rodas (Sal) 6-1,6-3

3rd place: Andy Casados (Lex) defeated Juan Salazar (Sal) 6-1, 6-1

Doubles

1st place:  Hartzell/Hartzell (Led) defeats Burton/Drye (Sal) 6-2,6-2

5th place:  Bennett/Crews (WD) defeats Archer/McGee (Sal)  6-2,6-1

Prep baseball

Maddux Holshouser pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and Carson (18-5, 8-1) pulled out a 3-2 North Piedmont Conference win against South Iredell on Friday to stay in first place.

Owen White and Logan Rogers had doubles for the Cougars. White and Garrett Alewine drove in runs.

Carson plays at West Rowan today at 4 p.m.

Wayne Mize stayed incredibly hot as East Rowan (17-6, 8-2)  pummeled  North Iredell, 11-1, in NPC action on Friday in Olin.

Mize went 3-for-3. Hayden Setzer and Jake Davis drove in two runs each to back the strong pitching of Will Brown. Brown struck out six and pitched a one-hitter.

Maven Parker led Concord to a 1-0 win against A.L. Brown in South Piedmont Conference action on Friday. Parker pitched a shutout and drove in the only run. Ryan O’Kelly pitched brilliantly for the Wonders in a losing effort.

SPC champ Robinson beat Central Cabarrus, 3-1, on Friday. Chase Orrock drove in two runs to back strong pitching by Jason White.
