Area Sports Briefs: Butts leads Catawba to baseball split

ANDERSON, S.C. — Catawba’s baseball team  managed to split a doubleheader at Anderson on Friday.

The Indians pulled out the first game, 9-8, when freshman Joe Butts followed a Heath Mitchem (Carson) walk with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

Lee Poteat (West Rowan) went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Jacob Nester  had two hits and two RBIs.

Butts had a terrific game, scoring four times and pounding three hits.

Chance Bowden (Salisbury) chipped in with a solo homer.

Catawba (18-17, 12-5  SAC)  trailed 6-3 after five innings but was able to fight back.

D.J. Laxton (4-1) was sharp in relief. Hunter Shepherd pitched the ninth for his second save.

• Anderson Dill pitched a two-hitter for Anderson, and the Trojans dominated the nightcap, 8-0.

Connor Johnson (East Rowan) started for the Indians and took the loss.  Johnson (1-2) pitched five innings and struck out six.

The teams will play a single game today. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Jake Pritchard (North Rowan, Rowan Legion) had successful shoulder surgery this week.

Pritchard will be redshirted this season and should be ready for fall activities.

Catawba softball

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — Catawba had been on a roll, but the Tusculum Pioneers cooled off the Indians on Friday.

Catawba (18-17, 6-4 SAC) dropped a tough one in the opener, 6-5. Leah Huggins and Monica Taylor had two hits each.

Huggins, Taylor, Kaylee Cook (A.L. Brown) and Carlee Brawley drove in runs.

Catawba was shut down, 4-0, in the nightcap.

Catawba tennis

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. —  Catawba and host Carson-Newman split a pair of competitive men’s and women’s SAC matches on Friday afternoon. Catawba’s men won, 5-4.but Catawba women lost, 5-4.

Pfeiffer softball

FAYETTEVILLE — The Pfeiffer softball team (29-3) dominated a doubleheader at Methodist  on Friday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-0 and 12-0.

In the first game, Kiana Millsaps was the star, both with the bat and in the circle. Millsaps crushed a three-run homer and won her 19th game.

It was more of the same in  the second game, with two Pfeiffer hurlers combining on a shutout.

Vada Blue Sherrill  is 43-for-43 on steal attempts.

Prep baseball

Action begins today in the annual East Rowan Spring Break Tournament at Granite Quarry’s Staton Field.

Eight teams will be battling for the championship, including the host Mustangs and West Rowan.

West Rowan plays West Stanly today at 1 p.m., while East Rowan takes on Mooresville in the final game of the day at 7 p.m.

Cox Mill, coached by former East assistant John McNeil, and South Iredell will get the tourney started at 10 a.m. The 4 p.m. game is a matchup of Central Cabarrus and West Iredell.

  

Prep softball

Carson pitcher Riley Stewart and third baseman Jess Freeze plan to sign with Greensboro College in mid-April.

Carson will join East Rowan, West Rowan and South Rowan in the Civitan Classic in Salisbury on April 5-6. Cox Mill, Mooresville, Mount Pleasant and Central Cabarrus also are in what should be an outstanding tournament.

Prep golf

East Rowan is competing in the First Flight of the Palmetto High School Golf Championship.

Twenty-eight teams from nine states are competing at True Blue Golf Club and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in a 54-hole event.

The tournament began with a qualifying round Thursday that was used to flight the teams.

Bryson Sprinkle shot 80 to lead the Mustangs on Friday. Austin Miller shot 81, William Garland shot 84, Colby Patterson shot 90, and Will Peeler shot 97.

Prep tennis

  North Rowan tennis won against Yadkin Valley Conference opponent West Montgomery, 5-4.

Singles winners for the Cavaliers were Hans Roemer, Garrett Jennings and Terrence Settlemeyer.

Doubles winners were Roemer/Jared Hensley and Jennings/Ray Montes.
